Social Media Marketing is the process of reaching prospects and customers, and acquiring traffic and visibility through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and many others.

Study: 39% Of Americans Took Part in Political Or Social Activity During The 2012 Campaign

During the 2012 it may have felt like 100% of the people you saw on Twitter and Facebook featured politically-oriented content the the actual number was far less. A new Pew Internet study shows that 39%  of adults took part in some form of political activity on  a social network. The majority of the activity came in the form of liking or sharing political material (23% of all adults polled). Of all social networking specific users, 38% were active liking or sharing political material. The second most social activity to do with politics (35%) was to encourage others to vote. Social network [...]

Study: Facebook Activity Correlates To TV Viewership (Social TV’s Not Just For Twitter)

Much has been made of the symbiotic relationship between TV and Twitter and the company's recent activity to attract both broadcasters and marketers to the platform.  Now a new paper from social advertising platform, CitizenNet, looks at how Facebook activity correlates with TV-viewing habits. For the study, CitizenNet looked the two weeks of Facebook Page Insights data leading up to the premieres of 77 TV shows from both broadcast and cable networks from 2011 and 2012. They then looked at whether the Facebook Insights metrics would correlate with Nielsen viewership for the premier episod [...]

Social Data Proficiency: A Key Success Driver For Agencies

As social media becomes an increasingly vital component of marketing strategies, agencies are getting more comfortable with associated social data. For example, analyzing brand mentions and sentiment data is becoming fairly common practice, even among smaller shops. But, as I’ve pointed out earlier, social listening data is just the tip of the iceberg. The variety and volume of data available to marketers keep getting bigger -- and more interesting -- each day. Agencies that know how to harness and use social data creatively will profit and grow; those that do not will be left behind. [...]

The Mindset that Makes Online Marketing Work

When I started publishing online back in 1998, I didn't have a shred of traditional marketing experience. It may sound counter-intuitive, but that ended up giving me a huge advantage. The first marketing book I read was Seth Godin’s Permission Marketing in 1999, which sparked my "aha" moment regarding how the Internet worked from a marketing standpoint. Godin made it clear that the Internet was a direct-response environment that required an evolved form of direct marketing. You didn't buy mailing lists. You built audiences. Likewise, my company, Copyblogger Media, began a [...]

Tumblr Launches In-Stream Mobile Ads Today, Ahead Of Desktop

Tumblr launched mobile ads today with high-profile advertisers including GE, Warner Bros and ABC. The ads appear within users' content streams within Tumblr iOS and Android apps. This is the first in-stream ad try for Tumblr since the site launched in 2007. Up to now, sponsored ads have appeared in  Tumblr Radar -- the area in the right rail of users' dashboards on desktops -- and in the Spotlight area on category pages. The Tumblr staff post announced that after running sponsored Radar posts for nearly a year, "today we're bringing these posts over to our mobile apps". According to AdA [...]

Yellow Light Social Media: Use These Tactics With Caution

Smart social media marketers know that some tactics are totally off the table. Spamming that Google Plus community with your off-topic links? That's a no-no. Auto-DMs to new Twitter followers? No way. Then there are tactics that aren't inherently bad, but you may not want to use them every day. Like pop-up ads, advertising jingles or re-targeting campaigns, these tactics can be just shy of annoying if used incorrectly, but often get the kind of results that make them irresistible to try. Let's call these "yellow light" social media tactics. When you come to a yellow light in traffic, [...]

Winning Shorty Awards In Space: 5 Questions With NASA’s Social Media Managers

You think you have it tough when it comes to managing social media? Put yourselves in NASA's shoes -- or spacesuit -- for a moment: the agency has almost 500 different social media accounts spread across multiple social networks. Yes, 500. I get tired just thinking about the coordination effort involved. "If we tried to manage 500 social media accounts, we'd fail," says John Yembrick, NASA's Social Media Manager. "So, rather than do everything from one hub, many of those accounts are managed from NASA's 10 field centers. And each one works with the scientists, engineers and others tha [...]

Your Links On Pinterest May Be Stopping Traffic In Its Tracks

Pinterest has been considered a top traffic driver for many sites, most recently showing its marketing clout by launching Pinterest Web Analytics. But, clicking on an image isn’t the slam-dunk traffic driver as it may seem. And, adding a shortened link to the caption of a pin may be stopping potential traffic in its tracks. If you spend any time on Pinterest, you’ll know that clicking on a pin only brings you to an image, and as a user, you need to click twice in order to get to the original source. Here at Marketing Land, we've been doing some Pinterest testing over the last few weeks, [...]

Twitter Expands Keyword Ad Targeting To User Timelines

Keyword targeting isn't new for Twitter advertisers -- they've been able to target keywords in Twitter search results since late last year. Starting today, advertisers can also target keywords in user timelines. The new targeting is available to all advertisers in all languages and markets, the company says. Here's how Twitter describes the new targeting: "...this new feature enables advertisers to reach users based on the keywords in their recent Tweets and the Tweets with which users recently engaged. This is an important new capability – especially for those advertisers looking for [...]

Study: 27% Of Time Online In The US Is Spent On Social Networking

We know that social media is an important part of many people's lives, but it is also a lengthy portion, as well. Experian Marketing Services released a study showing that in the United States, 16 minutes out of every hour online was spent on social networking and forums, roughly 27% of all time spent on personal computers. The next closest online actions were entertainment sites (9 minutes/hour) and shopping (5 minutes/hour). While these numbers are quite large, the trend is actually down a bit from 2011 when the US saw 30% of all time allocated to Social Networking. The additional mi [...]

Epicurious Becomes Latest Brand To Suffer Social Backlash From Tragedy-Related Tweets

If only Epicurious had been using Social Flow or Buffer, it might've avoided the headaches associated with social media's latest tragedy-related faux pas. But it appears the food-lover's website wasn't using either of those social management services, and sent out a couple tweets on Tuesday that looked like an attempt at self-promotion in the aftermath of a terrible event. Twitter user Thomas Powell seems to have been the first to notice (that's his image above), and coverage on other websites has quickly picked up steam, as is always the case when brands take this route with their s [...]

Facebook To Lose Three Electronic Arts Game Titles In June

Entertainment software developer Electronic Arts (EA) announced it will be retiring its Facebook games The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society on June 14, 2013. While The Sims Social reportedly gained as many as 10 million daily active users (DAU) in 2011, EA reports that activity has fallen off for its once-popular titles. With social games moving from browser to mobile devices, Facebook confirmed earlier this year that it is focusing on more action games for hardcore gamers. Currently, AppData reports The Sims Social and Pet Society at 500,000+ DAUs and SimCity Social at 100,00 [...]

According to their findings, the Entertainment sector won 28.7 percent of total shares for social videos, followed by the FMCG/CPG, Tech and Automotive sectors. The two entertainment video campaigns that drove the most shares were a set of two trailers for the movie Fast & Furious 6, which generated a combined 4,090,803 shares and Fox's ad for the 'Homer Shake' episode of the The Simpsons which garnered 568, [...]

Political Ads On Vine? Yep, The Attacks Have Begun

It's not just Hollywood that's embracing advertising on Vine, the political machine is dipping its toes in the same water, and the six-second attack ads are already looping for eternity. Via the Wall Street Journal comes news that the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has posted an ad that accuses Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch (yes, Stephen Colbert's sister -- she's running for a seat in Congress) of potentially hurting jobs in South Carolina due to her support of labor unions. The NRCC is calling it "the first time a political organization has launched an actual ad o [...]

Twitter Acquires We Are Hunted, Should Open New Marketing Doors For Artists

The music discovery service We Are Hunted has announced that it's joining Twitter. The news hit almost at the same moment that American Idol host Ryan Seacrest tweeted about "playing with @twitter's new music app." Together, those two items should open new marketing opportunities for artists to be found and connect with fans on Twitter. In a follow-up, Seacrest said that the Twitter music app "shows what artists are trending" and "also has up and coming artists." In its announcement, We Are Hunted only hints at what's in store as it joins Twitter: While we are shutting down wearehun [...]

Google Closing Social Login Gap With Facebook

Facebook has been the dominant source of social logins, but Google is closing the gap and now accounts for more than one-third of all social logins. That's according to the latest quarterly report from Janrain. After a couple years of consecutive gains, Facebook's share of social logins has dropped for two straight quarters now. In Q1 2013, Janrain estimates that Facebook accounted for 46 percent of social logins -- down from a high of 54 percent in Q3 last year. Google, meanwhile, has grown from 25 percent of social logins in Q3 2012, to 31 percent at the end of the year, and now up to [...]
