Report: Facebook Is Giving News Publishers Free Mobile Ads

facebook-like-600 Well, it is called the News Feed. For at least the last six months, Facebook has been adjusting its algorithm to reward high-quality content and has admitted a strong bias toward news publishers. Now as Digiday's John McDermott noticed last week, Facebook is placing what amounts to free ads for publishers in users' mobile news feeds. McDermott noted that CNN's growth in Facebook likes has soared by 1.2 million in the last month, to more than 11 million, while in the same time span last year it added only 76,000. To be clear, the evidence is very circumstantial (obligatory remin [...]

Report: Priceline CEO Says Twitter And Facebook Ads Don’t Drive Results

hdr_negotiator Priceline CEO Darren Huston, who presides over one of the biggest spenders on online advertising, says Twitter and Facebook ads aren't effective for the travel site. “For Facebook and Twitter, we have endless amounts of money,” Huston told Bloomberg today. “But we haven’t found anything there.” Priceline's online marketing costs were $1.8 billion last year, according to Bloomberg, and the great majority of its advertising dollars are spent on Google ads. Those keyword targeted ads are more effective in drawing reservation-making customers. Facebook and Twitter's ad products hav [...]

U.S. Airways Deletes, Apologizes After A Pornographic Reply On Twitter

shutterstock_167343158 Routine social media customer service turned into a not-safe-for-work nightmare today for U.S. Airways. During an exchange with a disgruntled customer, the company's Twitter account replied with a link to a pornographic twitpic image. Although the tweet was a reply and therefore didn't appear on the timeline of all @USAirways' 418,000 followers, it was sensational enough to pick up serious viral steam. The tweet, which was deleted within the hour, was up long enough for countless screen-grab opportunities and Deadspin, and other chroniclers of Internet mayhem, quickly followed up with po [...]

Facebook Is Testing A ‘Pages Popular In Your Area’ Feature

FB-popular-pages Facebook is testing a new suggestion module on its right sidebar: Pages Popular In Your Area. The suggestion box, first brought to our attention Friday by online media strategist Samuel Edwards of Tenthwave Digital, has been appearing intermittently today for me. Results, as you would expect from an experiment, have been spotty, with pages for Eminem and Lil Wayne -- by no means local for my Costa Mesa, California location -- mixing it up with local restaurant and cupcake providers. And clicking through to the "See All" link -- https://www.facebook.com/pages/?category=local -- takes m [...]

Study: Only 16% Of People Use Social Media While Watching Prime Time TV

twitter-tv-200px A newly released study from The Council of Research Excellence found only 16.1 percent of survey respondents claimed to have used social media while watching prime time television. To evaluate social media influence on TV viewing habits, 1,665 survey participants were instructed to log any social posts about a prime time TV show, as well as any time they discussed a TV show on their social networks. The study's findings were based on 78,310 diary entries covering nearly 1,600 shows reported via a mobile app supplied by the research group. According to the report, social media has very li [...]

Katherine Heigl Vs Duane Reade Lawsuit May Serve Up Lesson In How Not To Tweet

shutterstock_141487798 New York pharmacy chain Duane Reade's social media team might be getting an expensive lesson in how not to tweet. And that means the rest of us get a free reminder about the perils of using celebrity photos in social media. First the news: Actress Katherine Heigl is suing Duane Reade in New York federal court, seeking $6 million for posting -- on Twitter and Facebook -- a paparazzi shot of her walking out of one of chain's stores last month. Here's the text of the tweet (which was deleted from the @DuaneReade account this week, after news of the suit broke): Love a quick #DuaneR [...]

Facebook Goes After Like-Baiters And Link-Spammers With News Feed Update

facebook-attack-chase-600 Continuing its quest to improve the quality of content on users' News Feeds, Facebook today announced changes that it said will reduce the visibility of pandering posts and outright spam. Facebook has set its targets on publishers of Pages "that deliberately try and game News Feed to get more distribution than they normally would." The specific abuses? Like-baiting: begging for users to like, comment or share a post (see screenshot above for an especially shameless example). Facebook said users find posts with such calls to action 15% less relevant than other posts attracting sim [...]

3 Pinterest Tips That Will Make You Better At Your Job

Pinterest Search Results Demonstrate Trends Party Ideas For Boys I've always felt bad for those folks whose offices block the use of Facebook and other social networks! I'm a manager myself, so I get it -- you don't want your employees wasting their time scanning Facebook for the latest from their not-so-closest-friends or shopping for nail polish on Pinterest. But I've always thought that blocking the use of social media ultimately just makes your employees want to use it even more, thus distracting them and having a negative impact on productivity. Of course, as a digital marketer, access to social media is absolutely necessary to my job, so I'll ne [...]

Buffer’s iOS App Upgrade Gives It The Power Of The Desktop

buffer Buffer, the social media scheduling and discovery tool, upgraded its iOS app today and says it now offers most of the features of its desktop client. Like Klout, which also released an iOS app upgrade this week, Buffer touts its service as solution for people who want to boost their social media activity without spending all day on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn. The service enables users to write a series of social posts and set them to trickle out during the day. It also has a content suggestion feature for those who need help with finding interesting information to share. [...]

Twitter And Facebook Declare #MarchMadness Victories

twitter-ncaa-peak-moments Did anyone win March Madness? No question, Shabazz Napier and his Connecticut teammates were the ones cutting down the nets after holding off Kentucky for the NCAA men's basketball championship. But when it comes to the battle for big event social media supremacy, the clock is still running and the major players are battling for position. Twitter and Facebook each posted social tales-of-the-tape today, touting high activity related to the three-week celebration of hoops. Each social network focused on different metrics, so it's not possible to declare a victor. Still it's instructive [...]

LinkedIn Business Users Not Happy With Move To Eliminate Product And Services Pages

nike_link LinkedIn's plan to discontinue Product and Services pages on company pages, effective April 14, has raised the hackles of vocal group on the network's help forum. LinkedIn, which announced the change via email last month, suggests that companies focus their efforts on posting updates from their accounts, noting that such posts are more apt to reach followers feeds, or creating Showcase pages. Showcase pages, LinkedIn says, are designed to highlight a particular brand or product. They give customers the ability to follow the Showcase page, and therefore receive updates about the focus [...]

Study: Fan Engagement On Google+ Narrowly Trails Facebook, Nearly Doubles Twitter

google-plus-600 Here's more evidence that smart marketers shouldn't neglect to include Google+ in their social media mix: Google+ generates nearly as much engagement per follower as Facebook and nearly twice as much as Twitter. The surprising results come from a Forrester Research study of the social profiles of 50 global brands on Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube and Twitter. Forrester looked at more than 3 million user interactions with more than 2,500 brand posts during the first quarter of 2014 and found that Google+'s rate of engagement per post compared very well with it [...]

HootSuite Recasts The Game Of Thrones Opening Credits With Your Favorite Social Networks

A Game of Social Thrones - YouTube 2014-04-04 14-52-43 2014-04-04 14-53-10 HBO's bloody fantasy series Game of Thrones returns for Season 4 tonight, and HootSuite has pulled together a creative reminder of how social media life can imitate art. You don't have to know the difference between House Stark and House Lannister to appreciate HootSuite's homage to the show's opening credits with Facebook, Google, Twitter and LinkedIn standing in for Game of Thrones kingdoms. HootSuite explains: Just like at the start of the show, geometric buildings emerge section by section from a flat plane as you fly over them from above. Each of the kingdoms has characteristics a [...]

The Drop In Facebook Page Reach Is All About The Competition

facebook-like-600 One key reason that Facebook Pages are reaching fewer of their fans with posts: the number of Pages Liked by the average Facebook user has increased by more than 50% in the last year. That statistic, provided by Will Cathcart, Facebook's News Feed director of product management, in a recent interview with Josh Constine of TechCrunch, is a plausible explanation for the approximate 50% drop in organic Page reach per fan in the last six months, illustrated in this chart from EdgeRank Checker: Constine's detailed explanation of how Facebook determines what to show in users' News Feeds is exc [...]

Did Samsung Go Too Far With Big Papi-President Obama Selfie?

ortiz-obama-selfie-600 Samsung's aggressive celebrity social media marketing strategy took a bit of a hit this week when the White House recoiled after learning that the selfie Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz took with President Barack Obama had promotional strings attached. Ortiz, the 2013 World Series MVP, snapped the picture with a Galaxy Note 3 on Tuesday during the Red Sox visit to the White House, and posted it on Twitter, where he has 636,000 followers. Someone -- looking at video, it doesn't appear to be Ortiz -- said "Cha-ching" as Big Papi took the shot. The tweet has been retweeted more than [...]

Survey Shows Twitter Users Find Ads On The Network Irrelevant, Random

twitter-app-600 Twitter's efforts to increase its user base and to encourage users to spend more time on the service are well documented and widely seen as crucial for the company as it works to extract value from the post-IPO social network. Last week, Deutsche-Bank released a largely bullish report (PDF) recommending that investors buy Twitter stock, based on a survey of 1,100 residents of the United States. As we reported last week, the survey showed that many people who leave Twitter were overwhelmed by the stream of information in their feeds but would consider returning if there were better [...]
