Microsoft Study: Multi-Screen Behavior And What It Means For Marketers

We all know the day of multi-device and cross-screen usage is here. The challenge for marketers is to understand how to communicate effectively with consumers as they engage with multiple devices simultaneously and sequentially throughout the day. A new study commissioned by Microsoft, titled Cross-Screen Engagement, aims to help marketers learn how users are engaging with multiple screens and to find opportunities to reach consumers "in their moment". In the two-phase study, Flamingo Research and Ipsos OTX interviewed consumers in five markets—Australia, Brazil, Canada, the UK and t [...]

Report: #Hooray, Hashtags Coming To A Facebook News Feed Near You

To date, Twitter has owned the market on real-time, crowd-sourced information. Whether it's during the Super Bowl, Television, or cultural events -- users flock to Twitter (and hashtags) to see what's happening. Our own Danny Sullivan summed up the current Facebook/Twitter experience masterfully in the article "For Social Media Viewing, Twitter Is Live TV, Facebook Is DVR." Well, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Facebook wants out of its DVR status and in on the hashtag. Sure both Google+ and Instagram support tags, but Facebook has typically stayed far away from th [...]

FTC Updates “.Com Disclosure” Online Ad Guidelines

Under the banner of preventing "fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices," the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has updated its online advertising disclosure guidelines and requirements. A previous version of these guidelines was issued in 2000. The rise of mobile devices and social media marketing, in particular, were cited as reasons the guidelines were updated: How to Make Effective Disclosures in Digital Advertising, takes into account the expanding use of smartphones with small screens and the rise of social media marketing . . . Like the original, the updated guidan [...]

Pinterest Analytics: Making The Most “Actionable” Social Network More Actionable

Last night, Pinterest announced that it was introducing Web analytics -- dare we call them "Pinalytics"? This may well be a first step toward a larger monetization strategy. Regardless, it makes the site more marketer-friendly and provides insights into activity and interaction with boards and images on the site. The newly available metrics include impressions, volume (activity/people), recent pins and most-repinnned images. Marketers and brands can also see what pins drove the most visits to their sites. Pinterest Web analytics are available to anyone with a verified account. Once ver [...]

Pinterest Reportedly Set To Announce Business Analytics Product

Pinterest will announce an analytics product for its business users as early as Tuesday, according to Reuters. Details are sketchy, but Reuters suggests that Pinterest's analytics tool will: "show businesses the number of visitors it delivers to their websites" "provide information about user activity on Pinterest as it relates to a particular company, such as the frequency with which people are clicking on a company's online photos" It sounds fairly basic from that description, but you could certainly argue that any type of official analytics is better than nothing. Reuters say [...]

Twitter Touts Its B2B Lead-Gen Capabilities (& Has A New Ad Tool In The Works To Help)

Twitter's all-out assault on potential advertisers continued today with the latest in a series of blog posts explaining the benefits of doing Twitter ads. Today's target? The B2B community. The company is touting how tweets can have an impact on B2B tech audiences, again using statistics from its recent work with Compete. In this study, Compete examined the online activity of more than 6,000 Twitter users as they visited more than 400 B2B tech sites in late 2012. Two quick snapshot stats: 59 percent of Twitter users visited a B2B tech site during the study period, compared to 40 percent [...]

For Social Media Viewing, Twitter Is Live TV; Facebook Is DVR

When you follow someone on Twitter, you see everything they post. When you follow someone on Facebook, it decides what you see. Which is right? I'd say both, and it comes down to the live TV versus DVR personalities of each service. Should Facebook Show Everything? The issue of Facebook deciding what to show people in their Facebook news feed came up this week when Nick Bilton of the New York Times wrote about how over the past year, the engagement on his posts had dropped, despite his having gained a huge increase in Facebook followers. That echoed concerns from Star Trek alum and soc [...]

Twitter Likes Promoted Tweet Results, Pushes Brand Surveys Out of Beta

Today, Twitter released some initial findings of the Nielsen Brand Effect for Twitter's survey program that launched last fall to help advertisers measure the impact of their Twitter campaigns. The program is graduating from beta, and brand surveys will be "widely available" to advertisers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. The findings of the beta studies include: Promoted Tweet exposure drove 22% increase in message association Brand favorability saw a 10% lift when users saw a Promoted Tweet campaign 2-3 times versus once. Users who engaged with a Promoted Tweet [...]

China Sounds Alarm About Android Market Dominance

While Google's PC search market share may be hovering below 5 percent, Android is the overwhelmingly dominant smartphone operating system in the world's largest mobile market. As a result China may be preparing to take some sort of regulatory action against it. According to a Reuters report the Chinese government released a white paper, through its state-controlled China Academy of Telecommunication Research, that expresses concern about Android's domestic market share. According to figures cited by Reuters Android is on about 90 percent of Chinese smartphones, while iOS has less than 5 [...]

Facebook To Showcase New Newsfeed On Thursday

Facebook is holding a press event next Thursday at its Menlo Park, California headquarters. We'll be there live blogging the event at 10 Pacific/1 Eastern. The purpose of the event is to showcase a new look for Facebook's newsfeed. This may be both for mobile and the PC. According to an earlier article on TechCrunch (discussing mobile), the look of the new feed will be bolder and bigger, with new navigation: The news feed of the evolved Facebook app I’ve seen creates separate feeds for a few different content types including news and photos. Users navigate between them by swiping [...]

Hewlett-Packard Is First Company With 1 Million Followers On LinkedIn

LinkedIn finally has its first company with a million followers: Hewlett-Packard. HP announced the milestone yesterday on its LinkedIn profile page, and LinkedIn followed up today with its own announcement, and more background on how and why HP uses the social network. The company has benefitted from LinkedIn's follow button, which rolled out about a year ago and let companies grow their fan bases similarly to how they do on Facebook and Twitter. LinkedIn also says that HP used targeted Follow Ads to add about 300,000 followers over a two-month span. "LinkedIn has been critical for [...]

Instagram Reaches 100 Million Monthly Users

Instagram has hit the 100 million monthly user mark. CEO Kevin Systrom announced the milestone yesterday in a lengthy blog post that waxes poetically about Instagram's growing community. He also features a couple stories about Instagram users, highlighting the San Francisco-based Mission Bicycle, a small business with more than 42,000 followers (of course, followers are fine and good, but revenue is what matters most) and Sightglass Coffee, another San Francisco small business on Instagram. The milestone is interesting primarily in light of the dustup that Instagram faced late last ye [...]

Study: Facebook Page Reach Rises 31 Percent (& More) After Insights Bug Fix

Most Facebook Page Owners should be seeing substantial increases in the reported reach of their posts after Facebook announced and fixed a bug that affected its reach and impressions data in Page Insights. The folks at EdgeRank Checker studied about 1,000 Pages, comparing reach on posts that were published on two days: February 18th (before the bug announcement) and February 25th (after the announcement, and when Facebook told Page owners to start looking for improved data). The results are significant: the studied Pages saw a median Total Reach gain of 31 percent per fan, Organic Reach [...]

App.net Adds Free Accounts

App.net, previously only available via paid memberships, has added a free service tier to help open up the service to new members. But it's happening on a limited basis: New members must get an invite from an existing App.net paid subscriber. And once in the system, the new free-tier members will only be able to follow 40 users, and will also have limits on file storage and file size in their accounts. In his announcement, founder Dalton Caldwell says the free tier was always in the company's plans and now's the right time for it because there are plenty of third-party apps across multip [...]

What A Gay Dog Can Teach Us About Viral Content

She wasn't a marketer. She didn't optimize that infamous post on Facebook, or time it based on social media studies. Heck, she didn't even spell all its words right. She just knew Elton would die if she didn't get the word out, and that was enough. Late last month, a Jackson, TN, woman who runs a Facebook account devoted to finding homes for animals at the local shelter posted a new update. The story of the "gay dog" quickly spread, from Facebook to local media to Gawker to CNN to as far away as international news sites. "No one expected this one story to spread so far and wide, fr [...]

Facebook Confesses: Our Page Analytics Have Been Screwed Up, Fix In Progress

Facebook is notifying Page owners that a bug in its analytics system has affected both the reach and impressions data that's been showing in Page Insights -- and it impacts both paid and organic numbers. Logged-in Page owners should see an alert at the top of their Page the next time they visit, which points to this explanation of the problem. The company says the bug impacts data related to Paid Reach, Organic Reach, Paid Impressions and Organic Impressions - along with other data points that rely on those numbers, such as Virality and Engagement Rate. Facebook emphasizes -- particularl [...]

Twitter Launches Promoted Products API, Letting Marketers Buy Via Third-Party Tools

Little Twitter is growing up, today announcing it will offer an advertising API for its Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts products, a development allowing marketers to buy and optimize Twitter ads alongside their other media buying. The company has been testing the system for the last month or so, with beta partners Adobe, HootSuite, Salesforce, TBG Digital and SHIFT. "With the Ads API, marketers now have more tools in their arsenal to help them deliver the right message, to the right audience, on the desktop and on mobile devices — all at scale," wrote April Underwood, Twitter's prod [...]
