Now That The World Cup Is Done, Twitter Tries To Interest You In Something Else

twitter-so-much-more You mean to tell us that there's a world out there beyond the World Cup? Twitter sent an email Tuesday reminding users that though the monthlong celebration of futbol is over there's plenty more to discuss -- and by the way Twitter is a great place to engage in that conversation. By all appearances, Twitter had a very successful World Cup month with 672 million tweets sent, including a record 618,725 tweets per minute at the end of Germany's 1-0 championship game victory over Argentina. But it's crucial that Twitter -- fighting to satisfy Wall Street that is has a growing base of ac [...]

Finding Tumblr’s Place In Your Social Strategy

Tumblr logo Jonathan Gillette is credited with first using the term tumbleblogs to refer to short-form or microblogs in 2005.  In the following year, a 20-year old David Karp would borrow the term to name his new microblogging platform, Tumblr. Tumblr launched in 2007 and within weeks had over 75,000 users. In 2012, Yahoo! acquired Tumblr -- and, as of the time of this writing (July 15, 2014), the site boasts 195 million blogs, 83.1 billion total posts, and 97 million daily posts. For the 13- to 25-year-old demographic, Tumblr is more popular than Facebook. It would be a mistake to think that Tumbl [...]

Google+ Drops Real Name Requirement, Apologizes For Delay

google-plus-1920 Let the Google+ pseudonym rush begin. After three-plus years of restricting users to their real names on the network, Google+ announced today that it is abandoning the policy and allowing people to use any username they choose. Google's policy was among the more contentious issues surrounding the social network and had been softened several times, including making allowances for pseudonyms and nicknames in certain occasions. Today it opened the floodgates with a Google+ post: When we launched Google+ over three years ago, we had a lot of restrictions on what name you could use on your p [...]

Survey: Best Way To Reach Millennials Is On Social Media

social-media-spying SDL a "customer experience" software and services provider has released results of  multi-country survey of roughly 1,800 millennials (18 - 36). Not unlike other surveys the picture that emerges is of a highly mobile-centric audience that is willing to engage with marketers that earn their trust but are otherwise hard to reach. Most Millennials use at least two internet devices every day. A minority use three or even four -- 37 percent in the US. The survey also found that "19 out of 20" Millennials (globally) own smartphones and check them an average of 43 times per day (in US it's 45). [...]

Twitter Pushes Advertising Support Via Mobile App Notifications

Twitter-ads-support Twitter operators are standing by -- to help you buy ads. John Doherty, online marketing manager of Zillow's Hotpads rentals site, received a notification on his Twitter mobile app today with a strong call to action: Wow. Aggressive much, Twitter? pic.twitter.com/19qarXy4Cc — John Doherty (@dohertyjf) July 15, 2014   The notification's message is similar to the one Facebook displayed for Page administrators last week promoting Facebook's "Start to Success" advertising program. Start to Success, which Inside Facebook reported today has been around for three years, offers a dedica [...]

Twitter Puts A Hit On Companies Attempting To Provide User-Base Stats

twitter-logo-600 Fact: This year Twitter stock (TWTR) took a dive from nearly $70 a share down to just over $30 a share due in part to Q1 reports that the overall monthly users were slowing. According to Business Insider, Twitter has now begun shutting off data to companies that publish their own content on the size of the overall Twitter user-base. One developer told BI that "They shut me down last Friday night after the market closed," and another, Twopcharts, has the above image boldly on their homepage. There are a few theories on why this API access is being cut down for these developers. The fi [...]

Twitter Bets Big On World Cup, Scores With Engagement Records

twitter-world-cup-final Like Germany's national soccer team, Twitter entered the 2014 World Cup with the highest of expectations. Germany, extremely talented but searching for its first major title for 18 years, passed its test in the biggest way with a 1-0 victory over Argentina in Sunday's championship match. Twitter? Not too shabby either, although the game is far from over for the social media network. Twitter put heavy emphasis on the World Cup, hoping that the world's most popular sporting event would help it attract enough active user growth to meet Wall Street expectations. It riddled the new use [...]

Study: Facebook Ads That Tell A Brand Story Beat Traditional Performance Ads

Adaptly Facebook test of Refinery29 funnel ad series vs. standard CTA ads [caption id="attachment_91128" align="aligncenter" width="600"] A new study tested a sequence of Facebook ads (left) that took users through the marketing funnel versus a set of standard  call-to-action ads (right).[/caption] What if, instead of focusing on getting the immediate conversion from key prospects, a social media ad campaign served a set of creatives sequentially to tell the brand story and lead viewers through the marketing funnel before going for the hard sell? A new study shows that a sequential story-telling social media ad campaign can outperform a typical campaign in wh [...]

Facebook Vs. YouTube: Which Site Has More U.S. Visitors?

Compete-U-S-Monthly-Unique-Visitors-in-millions-YouTube-Facebook_chartbuilder Measuring Internet traffic is a notoriously slippery science. So when I read a headline that YouTube has passed Facebook as the largest social network in the United States, I took it with a dose of skepticism. Then I checked it out. And while time didn't permit a definitive study, I can report that the unique visitor battle between Facebook and YouTube is far from settled. Yes, they each report more than 1 billion active users globally. But who the leader is domestically depends on whose data you query. (I'll leave aside for the moment the question of whether YouTube is a true social net [...]

Sit Down Super Bowl. World Cup Final Was The Most Talked About Sports Event Ever On Facebook

facebook-worldcup-final Now what will we talk about? The World Cup, which wrapped up Sunday with Germany's 1-0 victory over Argentina, was the Facebook's biggest social media event ever, with 350 million users participating in conversations about the month-long event, according to the social network. Those users -- more than one-fourth of Facebook's active roster of 1.28 million -- generated three billion posts, comments and likes related to the World Cup during the tournament. Sunday's final also set a Facebook record, with 88 million people generating 280 million interactions, blowing past the 245 million [...]

Digg Relaunches News.me As “Digg Deeper” To Give You Personalized News Alerts

digg-new-featured What should you read or watch today? Digg is hoping to help you answer that question with a new launch of an old service, News.me. Renamed Digg Deeper, the tool uses signals from the people you follow on social media to surface the most interesting and important news of the day. It's not a new idea. News.me was originally a Betaworks-developed iOS social news app that was scrapped in 2012 after running afoul of Twitter's API display requirements. Betaworks, which also owns Digg, kept News.me going as an email newsletter. Nuzzel and Prismatic offer similar services and even the New York T [...]

Facebook Offers New Advertisers Personalized Support With “Start To Success” Program

start-race-600 Facebook, adding a personal touch to its mostly self-service advertising process, is offering new advertisers a dedicated account manager. The "Start To Success" program offers direct access to a Facebook representative to businesses that commit to spending at least $50 a day for a month (in other words at least $1,400). Facebook Page administrators started seeing a message on pages they manage today, promoting the offer: Clicking the link took them to a sign-up form, that included more details about the program: Start to Success is a program to help new advertisers succeed on Fa [...]

Just Like Facebook, Twitter’s New Impression Stats Suggest Few Followers See What’s Tweeted

twitter-analytics-600 Twitter has new analytics available that let anyone understand exactly how viewed their tweets are. Those stats also clear something else up. Just like Facebook, what you share on Twitter isn't seen by all your followers. Facebook has been under fire for over a year as brands have noticed that their posts have gotten less engagement than in the past. A common reaction is that Facebook's news feed shouldn't be artificially deciding what to show to a brand's followers. "Just show everything, like Twitter does it," is a general refrain. Twitter even took a shot at Facebook over this, in [...]

As Brands Newsjack #Lebron, Charmin & Cottonelle Shoot For Worst Tweets Ever

lebron-si-600px Major news can't spread on Twitter anymore without brands big and small adding their two cents in an attempt to newsjack the situation. And today's news that NBA superstar Lebron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers is no exception. King James, as he's called, began his career with his hometown Cavaliers then left four years ago to form a dream team with the Miami Heat that won two NBA titles (and lost two others). Those themes are popular among the brand tweets we've found so far in the couple hours since Lebron's announcement went public. Orbitz and Barbasol tweeted on th [...]

Facebook Adds Ability To Sell Virtual Goods To Desktop Gamers Via Ads

facebook-like-600 Facebook has always allowed desktop gamers to spend real money for virtual currency. Starting today, it's giving game developers the ability to sell virtual goods within Facebook advertising. The new product -- for News Feed and right-hand column ads -- has already shown success in reducing the friction for gamers to pull out their credit cards, according to post by Pin Lu on the Facebook Developers blog. Kixeye tested the new ad product to promote its Battle Pirates game, offering discounts on virtual gold and "saw over a 10 percent click-through rate and a 50 percent conversion rate fo [...]

Report: Social Sharing On Mobile Devices Surges 30% In Second Quarter

sharethis-mobile-20214-q2 Adding to the evidence that 2014 is a mobile tipping point, social data and sharing tool provider ShareThis reported today that sharing via smartphones and tablets surged more than 30% during the second quarter. Pulling data from its network of more than 2 million U.S. publishers, ShareThis found sharing growth of 27.8% for smartphones and 3.5% for tablets when compared to the first quarter. The ShareThis figures for desktop sharing dropped 5.5 in Q2. Although ShareThis didn't provide aggregate figures for device sharing, its growth numbers report coupled with last month's comScore estim [...]

Pinterest Updates Follow Button To Preview Brands’ Latest Pins

pinterest-whole-foods-follow Pinterest rolled out a new Follow button today that gives users a visual sample of what following a brand or business will mean. Users who click on the button will see a dialogue box with previews of an account's latest pins, "and your visitors won’t ever have to leave your website to follow you," Pinterest product manager Jason Costa wrote in a blog post. "Once someone follows your account, they’ll start seeing your Pins in their home feed." It's another smart move by Pinterest, which is working to turn its popular image-based social network into a money maker. It's cautiously m [...]

How Happy Would You Be After 99 Days Without Facebook?

facebook-edit-erase-featured How would you like to turn the tables on Facebook? Chances are you weren't one of the 689,003 people that Facebook manipulated emotionally during the now infamous 2012 experiment. But you could have been, and Facebook is not sharing the list of human guinea pigs. And you probably feel a bit creeped out by Facebook's ongoing social engineering, especially given all you know that the social network knows about your likes, opinions and daily habits. So how about joining an experiment you can control? Stop using Facebook for 99 days to test "how life without Facebook impacts user happi [...]

The CIA Celebrates Its Month On Twitter By Answering 5 Softball FAQs

cia-twitter-one-month As you would expect, the CIA doesn't run the most responsive Twitter account. In the one month since its coyly worded introduction to Twitter -- "We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet." -- the CIA hasn't sent a single direct @reply. It's a spy agency so you can bet it's listening -- and some critics don't think it's appropriate for a spy agency with a checkered human-rights history to be yucking it up on social media -- but the CIA hasn't been responding. Instead, it has been sticking to fairly pedestrian tweets of excerpts from CIA director John Brennan's speech t [...]
