Pinterest Updates Follow Button To Preview Brands’ Latest Pins

pinterest-whole-foods-follow Pinterest rolled out a new Follow button today that gives users a visual sample of what following a brand or business will mean. Users who click on the button will see a dialogue box with previews of an account's latest pins, "and your visitors won’t ever have to leave your website to follow you," Pinterest product manager Jason Costa wrote in a blog post. "Once someone follows your account, they’ll start seeing your Pins in their home feed." It's another smart move by Pinterest, which is working to turn its popular image-based social network into a money maker. It's cautiously m [...]

How Happy Would You Be After 99 Days Without Facebook?

facebook-edit-erase-featured How would you like to turn the tables on Facebook? Chances are you weren't one of the 689,003 people that Facebook manipulated emotionally during the now infamous 2012 experiment. But you could have been, and Facebook is not sharing the list of human guinea pigs. And you probably feel a bit creeped out by Facebook's ongoing social engineering, especially given all you know that the social network knows about your likes, opinions and daily habits. So how about joining an experiment you can control? Stop using Facebook for 99 days to test "how life without Facebook impacts user happi [...]

The CIA Celebrates Its Month On Twitter By Answering 5 Softball FAQs

cia-twitter-one-month As you would expect, the CIA doesn't run the most responsive Twitter account. In the one month since its coyly worded introduction to Twitter -- "We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet." -- the CIA hasn't sent a single direct @reply. It's a spy agency so you can bet it's listening -- and some critics don't think it's appropriate for a spy agency with a checkered human-rights history to be yucking it up on social media -- but the CIA hasn't been responding. Instead, it has been sticking to fairly pedestrian tweets of excerpts from CIA director John Brennan's speech t [...]

Facebook Reports Month-Long “Discrepancy” In Reach & Engagement On Pages

facebook-pages-600 If any Facebook Page administrators were wondering about iffy reach and engagement metrics for posts recently, Facebook quietly provided an explanation today. As reported first by the Inside Facebook blog, Page managers who access the Insights dashboard are seeing this message: There is a discrepancy in the engagement and reach metrics for all Page Posts and Boosted Posts between 5/30 and 6/30. We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Inside Facebook was tipped to the notification by Rachel Globus, social media strategist for ABC 10News in San Diego, who said Faceb [...]

Privacy Watchdog Group Files Complaint Against Facebook: They “Messed With People’s Minds”

facebook-newsfeed-featured A privacy watchdog group today filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission claiming that Facebook "purposefully messed with people's minds" with its psychological research in 2012. The Electronic Privacy Information Center charged that the research study -- which manipulated the News Feeds of nearly 700,000 Facebook users to study their emotions -- was a deceptive trade practice and violated an FTC privacy consent order. EPIC is seeking sanctions, including forcing Facebook to make public its News Feed algorithm. "At the time of the experiment, Facebook did not state [...]

Facebook Wants To Know If Posts In Your News Feed “Feel” Like Ads

facebook-ad-survey-span Facebook has set a very high bar for advertising on its network, pushing for ads that "delight" users as much as posts from your friends and family. Hitting that mark -- or at least approaching it -- is important for Facebook as it works to balance revenue generation with the need to make sure its users aren't flooded with advertising. That's why Facebook engineers are continually fiddling with the dials of the News Feed algorithm to make sure users are being served content that will keep them satisfied and coming back for more. Most of that tinkering happens under the hood, without users' [...]

Whoopsies: A System Mix-Up Sent The Wrong Facebook Ad Receipts & Data To Advertisers

oops-mistake-featured If you are a Facebook Advertiser that found yourself perplexed by your most recent ad receipt you can breathe a sigh of relief as the mix-up was likely the result of a system-wide issue. This issue delivered the wrong receipts and data to other advertisers that included the ad name, clicks, impressions and amounts causing much confusion. Thankfully, this receipt issue had no outcome on the actual ad delivery or billing for your account. This issue has been resolved now, and Facebook released the following on the topic: You may have received email receipts for advertising charges unrela [...]

New Global Facebook Ad Places ‘Missed Calls’ On The Behalf Of Users

Missed-Call While you may have the most recent Samsung or Google smartphone model to access the internet (and Facebook), you may be surprised to find that globally, you are in the minority. Worldwide, 7 out of every 10 people use simpler, feature phones when accessing the internet. This usage is mainly in high growth countries like India, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa and Nigeria. In some of these locations (especially in India) the high cost of voice calls lead to users placing a call, quickly hanging up before the other end answered. Much like a pager, this format would allow for communicat [...]

Janrain Q2 Report: Facebook Maintains Social Login Lead, Stops Long Slide

Q2-janrain-social-logins Facebook padded its lead in the battle for market share in the social login space, stopping a six-quarter slide, according to second quarter results from customer management firm Janrain. Facebook now accounts for 44% of social logins on the sites in Janrain's network. That's a gain of 1.5% percentage points over Q1, and the first increase for Facebook since the third quarter of 2012. Google+ maintained its solid second-place position, but slipped slightly, dropping to 37%, one percentage point lower than its first quarter results. After Facebook and Google+, the dropoff is severe. T [...]

The links can be published from an app, a Facebook page or copy-pasted URLs and have been adopted by apps such as Spotify, Mailbox, Quip, Hulu, Redfin, Goodreads, Live Nation and Vimeo and third party SDKs such as the Xama [...]

vine-loops Twitter's six-second video platform Vine was updated today to include "loop counts" to show how many times videos have been viewed on the network. Loop counts are visible on the desktop version of the site and on updated iOS and Android apps that are being released today. The updated mobile apps also feature a new design, "offering you bigger edge-to-edge videos and a cleaner view of likes and comments," according a post on Vine's blog. Because Vine started compiling loop data on April 3, videos created before that date will display a "+" next to the loop count to show that the actua [...]

Waffle House Fires Shot At Belgian Waffles, Scores #WorldCup Engagement Win

waffle-house-tweet Let's face it, most Americans' knowledge of Belgium doesn't extend much further than the breakfast plate. So Waffle House was in perfect position to take advantage of today's big FIFA World Cup game between the United States and Belgium. And the restaurant chain didn't waste the opportunity, firing off a funny broadside this morning: We don't believe in Belgium waffles — Waffle House (@WaffleHouse) June 30, 2014   The fact that the tweet had an error -- it's Belgian Waffles, not Belgium -- made the effort seem more spur of the moment, rather than a pre-baked corporate plan [...]

Was Facebook’s “Mood Experiment” Partly About User Retention?

facebook-newsfeed-featured If you've been online in the past 72 hours you're probably aware of the controversy surrounding a piece of 2012 research conducted on Facebook by researchers from Facebook, the University of California and Cornell. The research sought to investigate the phenomenon of "emotional contagion" on a massive scale. Since the publication of the research a debate has been raging about whether it was ethical (the consensus is no). Users were not informed about the experiment, which showed slightly different versions of the News Feed (more positive vs. more negative) to a limited number of people to s [...]

Spotted In The Wild: Facebook Advertising Prompt Seen On Pages’ ‘About’ Sections

About-Ads As Facebook's stock continues to trend upward, so does their advertising push. A new test feature was spotted in the wild by Matteo Gamba on InsideFacebook that shows a new ad prompt that some Page Admins are seeing. A new ad prompt is showing up on the 'about' tabs of Facebook pages featuring a "Promote" button with a prompt that tells admins to "Get people you care about to visit your website. When clicked, it takes the URL from the about page and lets the Admin quickly create an ad around it. From headline to image, location to demographics, a full ad can be created from this single [...]

Twitter Shopping Coming Soon? “Buy Now” Buttons Seen In The Wild

twitter-buy-shopping-featured Evidence of Twitter plans to enable users to make purchases by clicking on tweets surfaced Monday afternoon. "Buy now" buttons appeared in several tweets apparently generated by the shopping app Fancy, Re/code's Jason Del Rey reported. The buttons only showed up on mobile devices and are no longer visible. Re/code reported that "tapping on them didn’t do anything. But Re/code did speak to someone who said that tapping on the button earlier on Monday did lead to a checkout page opening up within the Twitter app. Re/code could not replicate that experience." This isn't the first time Fan [...]

Twitter Acquires TapCommerce To Improve Mobile Retargeting & Reengagement Ads

twitter-mobile-phones-featured Twitter announced today that it has acquired New York-based TapCommerce, a specialist in mobile re-targeting and re-engagement advertising. The acquisition, reportedly for about $100 million, was made public hours after Twitter announced the global rollout of its mobile app promotion suite. It's a further move to strengthen the company's mobile advertising offerings, along the lines of purchases of mobile ad network MoPub last year and native ad provider Namo Media this month. TapCommerce, which has roots in the e-commerce industry, adds programmatic mobile ad buying to the mix, repo [...]

KLM Learns A Real-Time Marketing Lesson: Avoid Stereotypes

mexico-klm Real-time marketing is a tricky business. You want to be in the moment, you want to be witty and clever, you want to be true to your brand. And you want to do all that without offending potential customers. That final point is the most important -- first do no harm -- and it tripped up Dutch airline KLM in a big way Sunday. Moments after the Netherlands knocked Mexico out of the World Cup, KLM tweeted "Adios Amigos! #NEDMEX" with a photo of an airport departure sign, photoshopped to include a mustachioed, sombrero-wearing icon. The reaction on Twitter was instant and overwhelmin [...]
