Emojis For All! Twitter Emojis Make Their Web Debut

Twitter-Support Until today, it's been a bit of a sad experience for web-only Twitter users. While these users have been viewing Tweets on their large monitors they've been missing some crucial context in Tweets -- the emojis. While mobile users were able to visually express their feelings with emojis, web users would have no context, and would simply see a square box ✨ .   Thankfully, this week Twitter has announced they now support the use of emojis on the web client. Until this point, there was no real reason for brands and marketers to use emojis as the square box for web users typically [...]

Did Samsung Go Too Far With Big Papi-President Obama Selfie?

ortiz-obama-selfie-600 Samsung's aggressive celebrity social media marketing strategy took a bit of a hit this week when the White House recoiled after learning that the selfie Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz took with President Barack Obama had promotional strings attached. Ortiz, the 2013 World Series MVP, snapped the picture with a Galaxy Note 3 on Tuesday during the Red Sox visit to the White House, and posted it on Twitter, where he has 636,000 followers. Someone -- looking at video, it doesn't appear to be Ortiz -- said "Cha-ching" as Big Papi took the shot. The tweet has been retweeted more than [...]

Vine Adds Private Messaging To Vine Friends And Other Contacts

vine Vine, Twitter's six-second video sharing app, added the ability to send private messages today: From Vine’s early days, we recognized that there was a growing desire and need for private messaging on Vine. We’ve watched the community come up with some clever ways to send videos to their friends as we’ve been working on this solution. Now you can privately send Vine videos and text messages to your friends. You can even send videos to anyone in your address book, even if they aren’t on Vine. With the update, available on iOS 6+ and Android 4.0+ devices, Vine pushes further into Sn [...]

Survey Shows Twitter Users Find Ads On The Network Irrelevant, Random

twitter-app-600 Twitter's efforts to increase its user base and to encourage users to spend more time on the service are well documented and widely seen as crucial for the company as it works to extract value from the post-IPO social network. Last week, Deutsche-Bank released a largely bullish report (PDF) recommending that investors buy Twitter stock, based on a survey of 1,100 residents of the United States. As we reported last week, the survey showed that many people who leave Twitter were overwhelmed by the stream of information in their feeds but would consider returning if there were better [...]

On Social Media Networks, The Mobile-Desktop Tipping Point Is Captured By This Chart

timespent It will come as no surprise that social media users are going mobile, more often. But a new comScore report presents the fact in stark relief, as shown in the chart above. "As desktop usage has largely remained flat over the past year for top web properties, mobile usage continues to surge," comScore concluded. The mobile-desktop balance of time spent by U.S. users in December 2013 on Facebook was 68%-32%. On Twitter it was 86%-14%. Pinterest checked in at a no-doubt tablet-skewed 92%-8%. Only on LinkedIn and Tumblr did users spend a majority of their time on the desktop sites. Mobi [...]

Is Marketing On April Fool’s Day Fool’s Gold Or Worth The Effort?

april-fools-men-silly-600 Prank idea: don't.— Denny's (@DennysDiner) April 1, 2014 Another April 1 has come and gone and we've got a few questions. Were you fooled? Were you amused? And most importantly for marketers who targeted the day: Was it worth it? Certainly, it's one way for brands to show customers that they have a sense of humor. And you can argue that giving employees a chance to stretch their imaginations is a valuable exercise. But the AFD playing field is getting so crowded that we wonder whether the costs are worth the benefits. The April Fool's flood now starts in late Mar [...]

Social Media: The Perfect Tool For Spying On Your Customers (Aka Doing Market Research)

social-media-spying Marketers need to take a page out of the modern parenting handbook and utilize social media to spy on their customers and target audience. Okay, that sounds bad -- but just like parents that keep tabs on their 14-year-old's Instagram account, marketers should follow people in their target demographic to see where they are, who they're with and what they're doing. Like the parent, marketers have their customers' best interest at heart -- we just want to give them what they need. But, like the 14-year-old kid, they won't always tell us directly. If you aren't already doing so, here are [...]

Twitter’s Advanced Search Now Comes With Easier Access To Date Range

Twitter Advanced Search Twitter's powerful -- and underused -- Advanced Search feature has added date-range fields. Now if you are looking for tweets during a certain time period, there's a quick and easy way to narrow down your search. Previously, such searches required users to use arcane coding -- since:2014-02-03 until:2014-04-01 -- in the search box. It's a small step but it clearly is in keeping with Twitter's recent efforts to simplify its product. [...]

Reddit’s April Foolery Wins A Slow Day For Social Media Pranking

meow It's April 1, the day when every fool thinks he (or she) is a master prankster and just about any company with an online presence can't resist joining the fun. Our colleagues at Search Engine Land are compiling definitive roundups here and here. Surprisingly (mercifully?), the major social media networks seem to be sitting the foolishness out or at least not trying very hard. Facebook posted a video of a group of friends pranking a buddy by wrapping his sports car in tin foil, using Facebook messenger to communicate before the reveal. And Twitter barely made an effort, announcing the [...]

You Can’t Own What You Don’t Pay For (In Social Media)

social-network-data-featured There's been a lot of discussion recently about ongoing changes that Facebook is making to its Newsfeed algorithms and how those tweaks impact brands. Notably, there was the release of a paper by PR agency Ogilvy discussing the notion of "Facebook Zero" and its potential implications, whilst food delivery start-up Eat24, in a more concrete and immediate move, posted a breakup note to Facebook, blaming the same changes. Whilst Eat 24's note, which ends with a threat/promise to delete its Facebook page (it should be gone by the time you read this), it's amusing in a snarky kind of way [...]

YouTube, Google+ Have An Engagement Advantage In Shareaholic Survey

shareaholic clip They may lag in total referral traffic, but YouTube and Google+ bring in a more engaged audience, according to a Shareaholic survey released Monday. The data, pulled from Shareaholic's network of 200,000 sites and 250 million unique visitors for six months ending in February, showed that users coming from YouTube and G+ easily beat Facebook and Twitter on three key metrics: average time on site, average pages viewed per visit and average bounce rate. It's important to note that we are talking about very small numbers of referrals. Shareaholic's data also show that traffic from YouTu [...]

In Response To #CancelColbert, Stephen Colbert Closes “Colbert Report” Twitter Account

It was one of the strangest things I've seen related to Twitter on TV. The host of a popular comedy show killing his show's Twitter account with the help of a Twitter founder. But that's what Stephen Colbert did with Twitter founder Biz Stone on Monday's show, and the Colbert Report's account is now gone. Perhaps it will turn out to be some strange April Fool's prank. But I don't think so. The segment happened after Colbert responded to concerns about the #CancelColbert campaign that started on Thursday, where a joke he made was tweeted out of context, offending some who felt it was offensi [...]

Now Google+ Shows You How Many Times Your Profile, Content Have Been Viewed

google-plus-featured For those of you following at home, the social media metrics scorecard has another entry. Google Plus has added the number of views you or your page have generated on the network. Here's how that looks for Sergey Brin's account: Here's Starbucks' page: Google made no splashy announcement about the change. The help page merely explains that "you now can tell how many times your content has been seen by other people, including your photos, posts, and profile page." Googler Eddie Kessler added in a G+ post that the number is a sum of views since October 2012 (Google's "social lay [...]

Eat24 Sends Facebook Funny “Break-Up” Letter Over Decline In Post Views

facebook-dislike-600 Frustrated Facebook marketers might have found their patron saint. Eat24, a take-out food delivery app, has announced that it is deleting its Facebook page with a very funny Dear John letter to the social network. Dear Facebook, Hey. It’s Eat24. Look, we need to talk. This isn’t easy to say since we’ve been together so long, but we need to break up. We’d love to say “It’s not you, it’s us” but it’s totally you. Not to be rude, but you aren’t the smart, funny social network we fell in love with several years back. You’ve changed. A lot. When we first met, you made u [...]

FTC: Brand-Incentivized Pins On Pinterest Potentially “Deceptive,” Require Disclosure

Cole Haan Eric Goldman alerted us this weekend (via Twitter) to an FTC ruling that may have a significant impact on the way that brands interact with users on Pinterest. The FTC determined (see embedded letter below) that a Cole Haan "Wandering Sole" contest that asked users to pin/re-pin images of Cole Haan products in exchange for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree "violated Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, 15 U.S.C. § 45." That section protects consumers against "Unfair or Deceptive Acts or Practices." It's also the section used to compel advertising or product-endorsement dis [...]

How Even Time-Challenged SMBs Can Upkeep Social Channels

shutterstock_alarmclock Many small business marketers avoid social media marketing because of the expectation that it will take too much time. However, we've seen clients benefit from as little as two hours a month on social media. Such benefits include: Facilitating communication with clients, vendors, job seekers and customers Increasing organic visibility by getting more content out on the web Helping to populate SERPs with positive listings when prospective customers research your company by name (and many do!) Building brand awareness Increasing incoming links to your site from social venue connectio [...]

Sig Varela, GM of b2 Miami Downtown Hotel (Photo courtesy Tambourine.) [caption id="attachment_78219" align="alignnone" width="600"] Sig Varela, GM of b2 Miami Downtown Hotel (Photo courtesy Tambourine.)[/caption] A number of independent hotels are due to start using Google Glass later this year as part of their content development and social media marketing efforts. Tambourine, a Florida-based agency that specializes in hotel and tourism-related marketing, is working on Glassware that will help its clients develop and distribute visual content -- photos and videos -- for use across multiple social networks. When it's finished, the app will allow "a larg [...]

Foursquare Wants You To Tweet Ads To Twitter Followers

foursquare-featured According to AdWeek Foursquare is about to introduce a new ad unit/format called "Tap to Tweet." It's another flavor of "post check-in" ads that the company previously introduced. After a venue check-in, a brand or advertiser message appears asking the user to tweet to his/her followers on Twitter (see image below). Reportedly the company tested this with Mastercard during the SXSW conference several weeks ago. The minimum spend commitment is relatively steep: $100,000. Cleverly this is a way to amplify Foursquare advertisers' messages using a third party platform, which is much larg [...]

Study: 30% Of Facebook Users Are Consuming News, But It’s Mostly “Incidental” Consumption

news-headlines-featured After posting an overview yesterday of the Pew Research Center's State of News Media report, we wanted to dig a little deeper into the study's research on social media news consumption. According to the Pew report, three in ten Facebook users get news from the social media site. Even with the relatively high number of people reading news on Facebook, Pew claims Facebook news consumption is an "incidental experience." According to the report, only 22 percent of the people reading news on Facebook believe it is a useful news resource. The remaining 78 percent are on Facebook for reasons ot [...]

VIDEO: What Would Eric Stonestreet Be Like As A Social Media Strategist for Richard Sherman?

Eric Stonestreet at Adobe Summit The comedic actor and star from ABC's Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet teamed up with NFL star Richard Sherman for a creative bit which premiered at the 2014 #AdobeSummit yesterday at the end of day 'sneaks' session. Eric Stonestreet was special guest and wildly funny co-emcee as Adobe engineers made their best pitches for new possible products and services. (After last year's sneaks session, 7 out of 10 ideas pitched became actual products in the digital marketing services suite.) Watch what happens as Eric Stonestreet tries to give personal branding and social media marketing advice to th [...]
