Survey: Best Way To Reach Millennials Is On Social Media

social-media-spying SDL a "customer experience" software and services provider has released results of  multi-country survey of roughly 1,800 millennials (18 - 36). Not unlike other surveys the picture that emerges is of a highly mobile-centric audience that is willing to engage with marketers that earn their trust but are otherwise hard to reach. Most Millennials use at least two internet devices every day. A minority use three or even four -- 37 percent in the US. The survey also found that "19 out of 20" Millennials (globally) own smartphones and check them an average of 43 times per day (in US it's 45). [...]

Interactive Content: The Successor Of The Landing Page

Passive vs. Interactive Content Conversion I've written about marketing apps and their role in the 4th wave of content marketing in my past two columns, describing some of the concepts behind them. To me, they are the interactive successor of the landing page -- the next generation of lightweight web experiences for marketing campaigns. This month, I'd like to share some independent evidence about how well interactive content performs in that role. Millions Of Reasons To Like Quiz Content As marketers are told to behave "more like publishers" with content marketing, it can't hurt to look at what the most successful digital [...]

Google Publishes Less Than Stellar Workforce Diversity Stats, Admits “We’re Not Where We Want To Be”

google-campus-featured Trying to be part of the solution versus being part of the problem, Google has started a conversation on diversity in the workplace by publishing its own lackluster workforce gender and ethnicity statistics. According to Google's findings, female employees make up only 30 percent of the company's overall staff. When reviewing employee ethnicity, only two percent of Google employees are black, and three percent are Hispanic. At 61 percent, the majority of Google employees are white, and 30 percent are Asian. From the announcement: We’ve always been reluctant to publish numbers abo [...]

What To Expect And How To Prepare As The U.S. Mobile Landscape Matures

mobile-video-tablet-600 Marketers of late have been inundated with the idea of the proverbial rising tide of mobile. But by mid-2014, this idea, while still certainly still ringing true for many emerging or developing markets, has largely run its course within the U.S. The tide rose, we're standing waist deep, and, as the landscape steadies, the short-term shifts have become less dramatic. To get away from the analogies, both the domestic smartphone and tablet markets have largely reached maturity, and more subtle shifts in computing behavior are now on the horizon. Consider that for U.S. markets, analysts h [...]

Apple Beats Staples: Ranks No. 2 On Internet Retailer’s List Of E-Commerce Sales Leaders

apple-store-600 According to a report from the Wall Street Journal yesterday, Apple has edged its way into the No. 2 spot on Internet Retailer's list of 2013 e-commerce sales leaders, second to Amazon, and now ahead of office supply store Staples. The report claims Apple's leap into the No. 2 position is a result of Internet Retailer's recent decision to include Apple's online hardware sales. Previously, Internet Retailer had only used digital sales from Apple's App Store and iTunes. Wall Street Journal claimed Apple's online sales were up 24 percent last year, reaching $18.3 million, while Staples onli [...]

Smartphone market share Source: Kantar Worldpanel ComTech (April 2014) Despite the overall upbeat iPhone report, Kantar s [...]

The study's findings were based on 78,310 diary entries covering nearly 1,600 shows reported via a mobile app supplied by the research group. According to the report, social media has very li [...]

3 Tips to Get Your Affiliate Network Working For You

shutterstock_171989792-gears-work Times are tough for affiliates. In February 2014, the affiliate channel accounted for only 7% of e-commerce transactions -- down from 9% in February 2013, and a drop in the bucket compared to major e-commerce traffic sources like organic search (24%), paid search (19%), and email (18%). The above figures come from The Custora Pulse, a free US e-commerce industry benchmark, aggregating transaction and customer data from over 100 US e-commerce retailers, developed and updated by e-commerce marketing analytics company Custora (disclosure: my employer). But don't go feeling bad for affili [...]

Key Data From Pew’s “State Of News Media” Report

Pew State of News Media 2014 The Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project has released its 11th State of the News Media report. A comprehensive "document," it covers TV, newspapers, magazines, radio and digital. I won't try to summarize the full sweep of this "best of times, worst of times" report. However, below I've excerpted a few key findings and charts that provide a snapshot into where things stand in US journalism and news consumption. Across platforms and industries news generates just over $63 billion in annual (mostly ad) revenues. The charts above show the revenue breakdown by medium and revenue so [...]

Study: Only 20% Of CMOs Use Social Media For Customer Engagement

social-media-conversation-featured In its series of reports surveying C-level executives, IBM's latest study revealed only 20 percent of the chief marketing officers polled leveraged social networks to engage with customers as part of their digital marketing efforts, and a growing number feel overwhelmed with the amount of available data. Interviewing 524 CMOs from around the world and in various industries, IBM's study found the number of CMOs who feel ill-equipped to interpret available data has grown in the last three years: In 2011, 71 percent of the CMOs we interviewed told us they felt under-prepared to deal with data [...]

Survey: 87 Percent Want “Do Not Track” To Elude Marketers

data-privacy-featured There's a massive gap between marketers' increasingly aggressive use of data and consumers' desire not to be tracked and targeted. This is not a new issue. However a new survey from social marketing firm Communispace underscores the chasm. The firm conducted an online consumer survey last year (n=8,343), with respondents from multiple countries. Most however (87 percent) were from the US. The overwhelming conclusion is that consumers care very much about privacy and are concerned about data-mining and tracking.  The most striking survey finding is that 87 percent would enable or clic [...]

Survey: Of Major Technologies, Social Media Is The Easiest To Give Up

social-media-600 Based on a new survey of just over 1,000 US adults, the Pew Research Center has released findings commemorating the 25th anniversary of the web. Pew dates the founding of the web from the publication of Tim Berners-Lee's seminal paper about a distributed network of computers and documents linked together by "hypertext." However the "web" only truly became accessible to people with the advent of the browser with its graphical interface in 1992 - 1993. Regardless, there are a number of interesting findings in the document. Few are surprising save one, which I'll get to in a bit. On bala [...]

You Can Love Your Marketing Data, Just Don’t Fall Under Its Spell

I Love Data I admit it: I have a conflicted relationship with data. On the plus side, I believe that data is one of the three biggest benefits that the digitization of the world has given us marketers. (The other two are malleability, the ability to easily change, experiment with and personalize the digital canvas, and intimacy, more direct interactions with customers.) I believe that good, data-driven decision-making can compensate for many of our irrational mental biases and lead us to better outcomes. And, I believe that every modern marketer should become adept at using data properly. If you' [...]
