Study: Nielsen Research Proves Twitter Impact On TV Ratings Is A 2-Way Street

twitter-tv-video-featured Nielsen released an independent Twitter Causation study today that proves Twitter activity influences Live TV Ratings, while Live TV Ratings simultaneously impact program-related Tweet volume. The study set out to discover if Tweets were driving TV Ratings, or if TV Ratings increased Twitter activity around shows already being watched. According to the research findings, while one hand does appear to feed the other, it's more frequent that Live TV Ratings increase Twitter activity around TV programming, versus Tweet volume increasing Live TV ratings. Of the 221 broadcast primetime progra [...]

Gigya: Only 2 Percent Of Social Sharing Happens On Google+

google-plus-featured Despite a reportedly growing user base, Google+ isn't popular when it comes to sharing content on social networks. A new report from Gigya says that only two percent of social sharing happened on Google+ in Q2 of this year (April-June 2013). That's a fraction of the sharing that took place on Facebook, Twitter and even Pinterest, Gigya says. Those same three sites -- Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest -- are the top sharing destinations from both media/publishing sites and e-commerce sites, too. But in the latter category, e-commerce, Pinterest is actually the top sharing destination. [...]

Social Login Shares Saw Little Change In Q2, Janrain Says

janrain logo After a couple quarters of gains, Google's share of social logins across the Web flattened in the second quarter of 2013. Similarly, Facebook's share of social logins also flattened during Q2. But that's a better sign for Facebook, because it had seen its share of social logins drop for two quarters in a row. According to Janrain's latest quarterly report, Facebook still holds 46 percent share of social logins and Google is still second at 34 percent. And the folks at Janrain must've had an easy time putting that chart together, because it's pretty much exactly the same as the cha [...]

Topsy: Instagram Shares Easily Beat Vine On Twitter, Unless You’re Talking About “Influencers”

topsy-instagram-vine-featured Instagram has regained supremacy over Vine on Twitter, thanks to its new video feature? That seemed to be the story, based on stats from Topsy. But now, Topsy has clarified there's a different story, one where Instagram shares on Twitter have never dipped below Vine, at least when you're looking at all activity rather than just "influencer" activity. Vine Beat Instagram? We probably helped kick off the whole "Is Vine bigger than Instagram?" news cycle three weeks ago, when we reported that there was more sharing of Vine on Twitter than Instagram. Here's the chart we showed then: That [...]

A Week After Instagram’s Video Launch, Vine Sharing Tanks On Twitter

instagram-vs-vine-featured It's now been a full week since Instagram added video recording to its popular camera app, and it's already had a dramatic impact on its main competitor: Vine sharing on Twitter has tanked. We can use Topsy's free analytics tool to compare how many times Twitter users have shared instagram.com links versus vine.co links, and the chart isn't pretty for Vine. Vine sharing went into a nosedive on June 20, the day of Instagram's announcement. Topsy shows there were almost 2.5 million Vine links shared on June 19, then a little more than 1.5 million on the 20th -- a drop of almost 40 perce [...]

#ItsAHit: Study Shows Facebook Hashtags Have Been Adopted By Big Brands

facebook-hashtags-featured It's now been two full weeks since Facebook jumped into the hashtag market. A recent survey from SimplyMeasured found that so far, hashtags have been a hit with the top brands on Facebook. From June 12th to June 24th, 56% of the top 100 brands have posted a Facebook update that contained a hashtag. Nearly 40% of brands have posted multiple hashtagged posts, and a small portion of the brands went hashtag crazy with 10+ hashtag laden posts in that timeframe. The hashtagging hasn't been on a fleeting trial-basis. Brands have slowly ramped up the use of hashtags since Jun 12th. Of the po [...]

Why Do Consumers Become Facebook Fans? Study Says It Depends On The Brand

facebook-like-logos Consumers may be a bit more sophisticated than the conventional wisdom would lead us to believe. According to a new study from Syncapse, there's not a single dominant reason that consumers choose to become a brand's Facebook fan. Instead, there are numerous different reasons it happens -- and, what's more, the biggest "fan-drivers" depend on what brand you're talking about. This is something that brands and marketers have been trying to sort out for several years. When I wrote about it in 2010 on Small Business Search Marketing, two separate studies both suggested that coupons and deals [...]
