The 2013 numbers grew by 17 percent over 2012. Last year the IAB reported $36.6 billion in full year ad revenue. One of the highlights, mobile ad revenue hit nearly $7.1 billion, doubling from last year's $3.4 billion. Digital video also grew significantly to reach nearly $3 billion. For Mobile App Monetization, Free(mium) Is Winning

smartphone-shutterstock According to a survey based study, jointly released by App Annie and IDC this week, the "freemium" model is the most popular way for developers and publishers to make money on their mobile apps. In-app advertising is another popular and successful method -- though only 42 percent of developer survey respondents were using in-app ads. The third most popular method (far behind the other two) is paid-app purchases. You can either consider WhatsApp a freemium model (free for the first year) or a paid app model (annual subscription). The same goes for apps such as the New York Times: the app [...]

smartphones-featured A report released this week by Millward Brown takes a quantitative and qualitative look at multiscreen activity from a number of perspectives. The report is based on a global survey (n=12,000 respondents, 30 countries). The US sample was 444 people, with some behavioral monitoring and interviews. I'm going to discuss just a few of the findings. However, there's a great deal of interesting material in the report, which is free. While this has been asserted by others in the past, Millward Brown confirmed that in the US daily smartphone screen time has now surpassed TV. That's also true wor [...]

The company, which specializes in location-targeted mobile ads, boasted that its geo- and audience-targeted display campaigns saw performance metrics "nearly 15 percent above the industry average" and search-ad response rates that were "37 percent higher than current CTR benchmarks."' E-Commerce To Cross $200 Billion Threshold This Year

ecommerce-online-sales-retail It's all but certain that when the smoke clears after Q4 holiday shopping in the US, e-commerce will have crossed the $200 billion threshold for the first time. That's based on extrapolating from data released today by comScore. The firm reported that e-commerce in the third quarter was $47.5 billion. That's up 13 percent vs. Q3 2012. We can probably expect fourth quarter e-commerce spending to be more than $60 billion, which would easily lift the full-year 2013 total to more than $200 billion. These are impressive figures and the market shows robust growth. However a much bigger an [...]

IAB: Mobile Revenues $3 Billion In 1H, 15 Percent Of Total

iab-logo-0922 The IAB has just released its Q2 and first half 2013 revenue report. Total digital ad revenue in the US was roughly $20 billion. Search was the largest single category and mobile captured 15 percent of the overall total in the first six months of this year. Almost all ad formats/categories were up in real-dollar terms. However percentages were down because of the rise of mobile. The IAB doesn't break out mobile ad formats as it does with PC advertising. Search is the largest single mobile ad format -- likely bringing in more than 50 percent of total mobile revenue. Mobile revenue [...]

Budgeting For Email Marketing: How To Invest In The “Killer App”

Holiday Emails Last week at the ExactTarget Connections Conference, I had that the opportunity to meet Forrester analyst Shar vanBoskirk. Like most in our industry, I was interested in her point of view on a question I often ponder, so I approached after her presentation and asked for it: “If email consistently has the highest conversion rate of all channels (search, social, etc.) why does it consistently receive the least amount of budget?” We see this with our clients, and it's something that Forrester Research reported on in their US Interactive Marketing Forecast, 2011 to 2016 that was recently fea [...]

eMarketer: Retail Industry Expected To Spend $9.42 Billion On Paid Digital Media This Year

eMarketer logo A new report from eMarketer says that the US retail industry will spend $9.42 billion this year on paid digital media. By 2017, that number is expected to grow to $13.5 billion, representing a 10.5 percent compound annual growth rate. As a consistent top spender in digital paid media, eMarketer reports the retail industry will keep its lead during the four-year forecast period, but lose a small portion of its share of total US digital advertising dollars, dropping from a 22.3 percent share this year to 22 percent share in 2017. With the largest portion of retail digital ad dollar [...]

Forecast: Mobile To Be 48 Percent Of Display Revenue By 2017

money-growth-chart-featured Data aggregator eMarketer has published a revised set of ad-revenue forecasts with an emphasis on mobile. The firm projects that mobile advertising will account for an increasing share of display revenue and represent nearly 50 percent ($14.5 billion) of all display advertising by 2017. Google will capture more than 50 percent of global mobile ad revenue this year; Facebook is gaining, however. According to eMarketer, Facebook's share of mobile ad revenue will grow from just over 5 percent last year to almost 16 percent this year. In terms of the broader category of global digital ad [...]

Amazon Beats Combined Online Sales Of Major US Retailers

amazon-featured The Wall Street Journal reports that the US Securities & Exchange Commission recently asked major traditional retailers to break out specific figures regarding their online sales, rather than simply reporting percentage growth rates. It turns out those actual numbers, combined, don't equal their nemesis Amazon. Amazon's 2012 revenues were $61.1 billion. However Amazon's margins are less than razor thin. Though many of the retailers mentioned in the WSJ article now see a healthy percentage of annual sales from the Internet, some, like Target, underperform the market. Target disclosed [...]

Smartphones Driving Nearly Twice The Commerce Of Tablets — comScore

smartphones Every report I've seen comparing conversions on PCs, smartphones and tablets shows tablets as having much higher conversion rates than smartphones. Part of the reason is that people rarely complete transactions on their smartphones -- they tend to buy later on PCs or tablets or offline. That's why it's both interesting and curious that comScore has data showing the percentage of e-commerce transactions happening on smartphones being almost 2X of tablets. However, as a percentage of the total value of e-commerce in the US mobile (smartphones + tablets) still constitutes less than 10 percent. [...]

Mobile Internet Time Now Exceeds PC — comScore

Keep-Calm-Mobile-Image-Final StatCounter will tell you that in the US, at this moment, 15.8 percent of web traffic is coming from mobile devices. Given that there are roughly 150 million smartphones in the country that seems like a relatively small percentage of overall traffic. While the aggregate number may still be small, when one looks more closely at particular sites and categories, as well as other metrics, a very different picture emerges. Mobile is rapidly becoming a dominant driver of traffic and search queries in many categories. Source: StatCounter For example, the following are a cross section of [...]

73% Of Online Publishers Offer Native Advertising, Just 10% Still Sitting On The Sidelines [eMarketer]

Percent of Publishers With Native Advertising Nearly three quarters of U.S. publishers offer online native advertising opportunities on their sites, according to new research released by eMarketer from the Online Publishers Association and Radar Research. Just 10 percent of publishers say they don't have and aren't considering adding native advertising to their sites. In taking the pulse of how publishers define native advertising, the study seems to hit on some consensus. Over 90 percent agree that native advertising is an ad's "integration into the design of the publisher's site." Interestingly (and somewhat bewilderingly), 21% [...]
