Eight U.S. Firms Control 80 Percent Of Worldwide Mobile Ad Revenue

money-growth-chart-featured As we saw yesterday, Yahoo is struggling to get its display business back in black. Data aggregator eMarketer says that will happen, but that the company's share of the global advertising market will fall to fourth place -- after Microsoft. Google and Facebook will continue to be the top global advertising players, though Google far exceeds others in its overall share. Yet, even Google is under pressure from intensifying competition and the increasing "mobilization" of the internet. In mobile, Facebook has just under half of Google's global ad share according to eMarketer. Twitter is num [...]

Forecast Says Digital Revenue Will Exceed TV By 2018

mobile-devices-featured If eMarketer's latest media spending forecast is accurate it will mean that by 2018, there will be more digital ad revenue than TV revenue. The internet would become the largest single medium in the US advertising world. The following table (created by me) shows the real dollar values behind the market share percentages in the chart above for PC, mobile and TV advertising in the eMarketer forecast: Source: eMarketer The forecast doesn't assume, as you can see, a loss of TV revenue. Rather, it assumes massive growth in mobile and some transfer of desktop spending to mobile. By the end [...]

Mobile Ad Revenues To Surpass Newspapers, Magazines, Radio This Year — Forecast

mobile-devices-featured According to a new forecast from eMarketer, total media spending in the US will see its largest increase in a decade reaching $180.1 billion. The firm says that the growth will be lead by TV and mobile. Overall digital ad spending will represent almost 30 percent of all US ad spending this year according to eMarketer, which bases its forecasts on a wide range of third party data including other firms’ media spending forecasts. The eMarketer forecast predicts that mobile advertising will represent roughly 10 percent of all media ad spending. That would mean it would exceed tradition [...]

iPhone Has Largest Market Share Growth Over Past 3 Years

iphone-5-featured With US smartphone penetration among mobile subscribers now at 70 percent, comScore released its May smartphone data yesterday. Compared with last month there isn't much change in the numbers. Android remains the top OS, the iPhone is the top individual device and Facebook is the most widely distributed and used mobile app. When we look at the data over the past three years however it becomes more interesting. BlackBerry has seen a precipitous decline in share (you knew that). Microsoft's share is essentially flat and so is Android's (despite millions more devices in the market in real numb [...]

Comscore: Apps Now Account For Half Of All Digital Media Time

mobile-devices-trends Even if you never looked at a single survey or piece of data you'd know that time spent with smartphones and tablets is growing dramatically, just from anecdotal experience. However, there are multiple studies that have reported mobile devices drive more than 50 percent of internet time. Digital metrics firm comScore now says that mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) "accounted for 60 percent of total digital media time spent" in May. More remarkably apps represent 51 percent of all digital media time. (Per comScore, apps constitute roughly 83 percent of mobile time spent; Nielsen sa [...]

The chart below reflects how full year 2012 and 2013 revenues were broken out by ad format/type. We can assume most of the distribution is consistent with the 2013 allocation. An exception may be mobile, which grew from 9 percent of tot [...]

For Mobile App Monetization, Free(mium) Is Winning

smartphone-shutterstock According to a survey based study, jointly released by App Annie and IDC this week, the "freemium" model is the most popular way for developers and publishers to make money on their mobile apps. In-app advertising is another popular and successful method -- though only 42 percent of developer survey respondents were using in-app ads. The third most popular method (far behind the other two) is paid-app purchases. You can either consider WhatsApp a freemium model (free for the first year) or a paid app model (annual subscription). The same goes for apps such as the New York Times: the app [...]

The report is based on a global survey (n=12,000 respondents, 30 countries). The US sample was 444 people, with some behavioral monitoring and interviews. I'm going to discuss just a few of the findings. However, there's a great deal of interesting material in the report, which is free. While this has been asserted by others in the past, Millward Brown confirmed that in the US daily smartphone screen time has now surpassed TV. That's also true wor [...]

E-Commerce To Cross $200 Billion Threshold This Year

ecommerce-online-sales-retail It's all but certain that when the smoke clears after Q4 holiday shopping in the US, e-commerce will have crossed the $200 billion threshold for the first time. That's based on extrapolating from data released today by comScore. The firm reported that e-commerce in the third quarter was $47.5 billion. That's up 13 percent vs. Q3 2012. We can probably expect fourth quarter e-commerce spending to be more than $60 billion, which would easily lift the full-year 2013 total to more than $200 billion. These are impressive figures and the market shows robust growth. However a much bigger an [...]

Search is the largest single mobile ad format -- likely bringing in more than 50 percent of total mobile revenue. Mobile revenue [...]

Budgeting For Email Marketing: How To Invest In The “Killer App”

Holiday Emails Last week at the ExactTarget Connections Conference, I had that the opportunity to meet Forrester analyst Shar vanBoskirk. Like most in our industry, I was interested in her point of view on a question I often ponder, so I approached after her presentation and asked for it: “If email consistently has the highest conversion rate of all channels (search, social, etc.) why does it consistently receive the least amount of budget?” We see this with our clients, and it's something that Forrester Research reported on in their US Interactive Marketing Forecast, 2011 to 2016 that was recently fea [...]
