shopping-featured This weekend comScore reported that for the first time Black Friday online sales topped $1 billion. The expectation is that today, the awkwardly named "Cyber Monday," will see potential online sales exceeding Friday's totals, perhaps reaching $1.5 billion as Americans throw off the shackles of austerity that have limited holiday spending over the past few years. Black Friday originally was a reference to aggressively discounted in-store sales, while Cyber Monday was so named for the day when people returned to work and could shop online with a high speed connection. The reality today is [...]

IAB: Q1 Online Ad Revenues Up 15% Over 2011

money-growth-chart-featured The first quarter of 2012 was a very good one for the interactive advertising industry -- the best first quarter on record, in fact, according to the latest Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) figures. Those surveyed by the IAB and Pricewaterhouse Coopers said they brought in $8.4 billion, 15% more than recorded in the year-ago period. President and CEO Randall Rothenberg attributed the increase to marketers' continued movement of their money online, to follow digital consumers on their computers, tablets or smartphones. The first quarter revenue wasn't down as dramatically from the fou [...]

Mobile advertising will come in somewhere around $2.5 to $3.0 billion in the US this year. Among the 110 slides in her presentation to the D10 conference yesterday is one that illustrates her thinking on this point. Source: KPCB (data drawn from numerous industry sources) This is one of those familiar time spent vs. share of ad spend slides that everyone has seen. Analyst Firm: $172 Billion In Mobile Payments This Year

mobile-payment-wallet-featured The confusion and cacophony around mobile payments, it seems, grows louder with each new product release or startup. Most people would consider mobile payments to be in their infancy. However a report from Gartner projects mobile payments this year will reach a massive $171.5 billion on a global basis. Last year mobile payments were roughly $106 billion according to the firm. The definition of "mobile payments' being used by the firm is extremely expansive. Hence the large number. Gartner said that it expects "Web/WAP access to account for about 88 percent of total transactions in North [...]

Report: $31 Billion In “M-Commerce” By 2015

Screen shot 2012-01-09 at 8.15.16 AM Holiday 2011 is being hailed by many as a kind of breakthrough for so-called "m-commerce": people buying things on smartphones and tablets. Actually it was more of a breakthrough for smartphone "shopping." Only a handful of sites -- mainly Amazon and eBay -- are actually seeing transactions through their mobile apps. The expectation is that consumers will become progressively more conformable with buying things through mobile devices over time. That's a reasonable assumption. Tablets are already seeing considerable "t-commerce" activity. According to eMarketer m-commerce sales in 2011 we [...]
