On a conference call to discuss Yahoo's exceptional $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer's admiration for Tumblr's achievements and culture was refreshingly transparent. AllThingsD reports the anticipated Tumblr acquisition was approved by Yahoo's board today for the amount of $1.1 billion. Kara Swisher from AllThingsD said the deal was a "foregone conclusion and was an unanimous vote" by Yahoo's board. They plan to announce the deal tomorrow, Monday, morning. Tumblr launched mobile ads today with high-profile advertisers including GE, Warner Bros and ABC. The ads appear within users' content streams within Tumblr iOS and Android apps. This is the first in-stream ad try for Tumblr since the site launched in 2007. Up to now, sponsored ads have appeared in  Tumblr Radar -- the area in the right rail of users' dashboards on desktops -- and in the Spotlight area on category pages. The folks at Compete made a splash today with a blog post that shows how Pinterest recently surpassed Tumblr in terms of unique visitors. Compete called it "monumental" and the news spread pretty quickly on Twitter and other tech/social circles. Brands and marketers finally have an analytics option to help understand activity and engagement on Tumblr. It's called Union Metrics for Tumblr, and it's the result of a formal partnership between Tumblr and Union Metrics -- the same company that offers the TweetReach analytics service for companies using Twitter. Union Metrics says its new service "can measure activity and engagement for any blog or any topic on Tumblr." Tumblr has gained a lot of new users and readers over the past year, and it also has a big fan in Google. (And possibly Bing, for that matter.) According to comScore, Tumblr saw a 100.5 percent rise in unique visitors between July 2011 and July 2012, reaching 26.9 million uniques in July. Here's another sign of Tumblr's growth: The blogging network/platform has cracked comScore's chart of the Top 50 U.S. web properties for the first time. ComScore's April 2012 report credits Tumblr with 23.5 million visitors during the month, which is good enough for No. 47 on the list. Success on Twitter and Facebook means posting in the early afternoons, while Tumblr likes the night life. Despite its reputation as a female-dominated social network -- or perhaps because of that? -- every team in Major League Baseball is now actively using Pinterest.
