Twitter Comes Up Big: Q2 Ad Revenues Up 129 Percent

twitter-nyse After a disappointing Q1 Twitter delivered a very strong second quarter. One might even call it a home run. Certainly it surprised analysts and investors who had been more modest in their projections. Twitter's Q2 revenues were $312 million, which was substantially above financial analysts' consensus estimates. In addition, earnings beat estimates by a penny. Its user numbers also were greater than expected. Both overall and mobile users were up, 24 and 29 percent respectively. Mobile was the source of 81 percent of the company's $277 million in ad revenues (or $224 million). Here [...]

Turtle Wax Mines Social Media Gold With #Reflectie Contest

turtle-wax There aren't many consumer products that inspire more adoration than cars. We love them, pamper them, polish them and show them off to our friends. There's a reason the 1975 lyrics by Queen's drummer Roger Taylor -- "I'm in love with my car, gotta feel for my automobile" -- tongue in cheek though they were, still ring true today. Except these days, instead of cruising Southern California's iconic Whittier Boulevard, car lovers are doing most of their parading on social media. That's one of the reasons Turtle Wax, which sells products that put a shine on America's auto fixation, has r [...]

shareaholic2q2014 Facebook, the king of social media referral traffic, is strengthening its reign, according to social analytics and publishing firm Shareaholic. In June, Facebook generated 23.39% of the total share of visits to Shareaholic's network of 300,000 websites. That total, a gain of 10.09% and 2.14 percentage points since March, is the highest Shareaholic has ever registered for Facebook. Meanwhile, all of Facebook's social competitors registered decreases in referral traffic since the first quarter. Second-place Pinterest (5.72%) fell 19% and 1.38 percentage points and third-place Twitter ( [...]

A new Tweet eludes to fixings on the forefront that will soon bridge the gap between the web and mobile versions for both iOS and Android. We're also making an update to the Twitter iPhone and Android apps that will allow you to access your entire DM history. — Twitter Support (@Support) Jul [...]

LEARN: Lucy The Movie’s Web Site Teaches You To Speed Read Scarlett Johansson-Style

lucy_movie Movie websites, more than any other type of marketing site, seem to span every point of the scale between horrifically lame and ingeniously brilliant. Far over on the ingeniously brilliant end of the scale is this promotional area within the Lucy web site, the new movie starring Scarlett Johansson movie, Lucy. Lucy is written and directed by Luc Besson and features Johansson as a drug mule who gains superhuman mental capabilities after taking a drug. The movie's promotional site keys in on that plot element by encouraging visitors to test their own brain power. But what's the drug that w [...]

WSJ: Twitter Is Cooking Up New Metrics To Convince Wall Street It’s Reaching Enough People

twitter-nyse Twitter has a growth problem -- more precisely it has a problem with Wall Street not believing that it's growing fast enough and therefore doubting its prospects for long-term profitability. Despite revenue that has doubled for five consecutive quarters, Twitter is losing the perception battle. Since the IPO last November, the microblogging company has been wrestling with expectations and comparisons to Facebook and its billion-plus base of active users. Twitter's stock price, which was once as high as $73 a share, closed today at $36.87. In April, when Twitter reported monthly active u [...]

Twitter Acquires CardSpring To Help Build “In-The-Moment Commerce”

cardspring-scree-grab In a move to enhance its e-commerce backbone, Twitter today announced it will acquire CardSpring, a startup that enables businesses to link credit- and debit-card purchases to digital coupons, rewards and loyalty programs. CardSpring, which specializes in linking and tracking online activity to offline purchases, should help Twitter further its efforts on that front, as well as helping it figure out how to better integrate purchasing actions onto the Twitter platform. From the Twitter announcement of the acquisition:  "Twitter has always been a vibrant environment for users to discover [...]

Now That The World Cup Is Done, Twitter Tries To Interest You In Something Else

twitter-so-much-more You mean to tell us that there's a world out there beyond the World Cup? Twitter sent an email Tuesday reminding users that though the monthlong celebration of futbol is over there's plenty more to discuss -- and by the way Twitter is a great place to engage in that conversation. By all appearances, Twitter had a very successful World Cup month with 672 million tweets sent, including a record 618,725 tweets per minute at the end of Germany's 1-0 championship game victory over Argentina. But it's crucial that Twitter -- fighting to satisfy Wall Street that is has a growing base of ac [...]

Twitter Pushes Advertising Support Via Mobile App Notifications

Twitter-ads-support Twitter operators are standing by -- to help you buy ads. John Doherty, online marketing manager of Zillow's Hotpads rentals site, received a notification on his Twitter mobile app today with a strong call to action: Wow. Aggressive much, Twitter? pic.twitter.com/19qarXy4Cc — John Doherty (@dohertyjf) July 15, 2014   The notification's message is similar to the one Facebook displayed for Page administrators last week promoting Facebook's "Start to Success" advertising program. Start to Success, which Inside Facebook reported today has been around for three years, offers a dedica [...]

Twitter Puts A Hit On Companies Attempting To Provide User-Base Stats

twitter-logo-600 Fact: This year Twitter stock (TWTR) took a dive from nearly $70 a share down to just over $30 a share due in part to Q1 reports that the overall monthly users were slowing. According to Business Insider, Twitter has now begun shutting off data to companies that publish their own content on the size of the overall Twitter user-base. One developer told BI that "They shut me down last Friday night after the market closed," and another, Twopcharts, has the above image boldly on their homepage. There are a few theories on why this API access is being cut down for these developers. The fi [...]

Twitter Bets Big On World Cup, Scores With Engagement Records

twitter-world-cup-final Like Germany's national soccer team, Twitter entered the 2014 World Cup with the highest of expectations. Germany, extremely talented but searching for its first major title for 18 years, passed its test in the biggest way with a 1-0 victory over Argentina in Sunday's championship match. Twitter? Not too shabby either, although the game is far from over for the social media network. Twitter put heavy emphasis on the World Cup, hoping that the world's most popular sporting event would help it attract enough active user growth to meet Wall Street expectations. It riddled the new use [...]

Just Like Facebook, Twitter’s New Impression Stats Suggest Few Followers See What’s Tweeted

twitter-analytics-600 Twitter has new analytics available that let anyone understand exactly how viewed their tweets are. Those stats also clear something else up. Just like Facebook, what you share on Twitter isn't seen by all your followers. Facebook has been under fire for over a year as brands have noticed that their posts have gotten less engagement than in the past. A common reaction is that Facebook's news feed shouldn't be artificially deciding what to show to a brand's followers. "Just show everything, like Twitter does it," is a general refrain. Twitter even took a shot at Facebook over this, in [...]

Twitter Revamps Analytics To Show Impressions & Engagement On Organic Tweets

twitter-activity-dashboard Twitter gave its analytics dashboard a major upgrade today, offering advertisers a deeper look at how well their organic tweets are performing. Users with access to the dashboard -- advertisers, Twitter Card publishers and verified users -- are now able to see how many times each of their tweets has been viewed on Twitter's Android or iOS apps or on Twitter.com. Also available: an hour-by-hour impression breakdown for the first day of the tweet, a running 28-day total of impressions and other engagement stats on all tweets, and the ability to export data from up to 3,200 tweets (an incr [...]

As Brands Newsjack #Lebron, Charmin & Cottonelle Shoot For Worst Tweets Ever

lebron-si-600px Major news can't spread on Twitter anymore without brands big and small adding their two cents in an attempt to newsjack the situation. And today's news that NBA superstar Lebron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers is no exception. King James, as he's called, began his career with his hometown Cavaliers then left four years ago to form a dream team with the Miami Heat that won two NBA titles (and lost two others). Those themes are popular among the brand tweets we've found so far in the couple hours since Lebron's announcement went public. Orbitz and Barbasol tweeted on th [...]

Twitter A-Listers Are More Likely To Have Their Tweets Indexed In Google Search Results [Study]

twitter-indexation-by-followers If you are counting on Google indexing your tweets, you had better have Twitter influence -- we are talking serious influence. As in, if you have fewer than a million followers, your tweet isn't likely to surface on a Google search at all. That's one of the key findings of a study that Stone Temple Consulting released today. After analyzing the last 20 tweets for 963 Twitter accounts, it found that tweets by accounts with one million+ followers were indexed at least 30% of the time. There were 58 of those in the sample, including nine with 3 to 5 million followers and 26 with more than 5 mi [...]

The CIA Celebrates Its Month On Twitter By Answering 5 Softball FAQs

cia-twitter-one-month As you would expect, the CIA doesn't run the most responsive Twitter account. In the one month since its coyly worded introduction to Twitter -- "We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet." -- the CIA hasn't sent a single direct @reply. It's a spy agency so you can bet it's listening -- and some critics don't think it's appropriate for a spy agency with a checkered human-rights history to be yucking it up on social media -- but the CIA hasn't been responding. Instead, it has been sticking to fairly pedestrian tweets of excerpts from CIA director John Brennan's speech t [...]

20 Reasons Why Social Analytics Is A Nightmare — And What To Do About It

nightmare-shutterstock Social media managers and analysts have one of the toughest jobs in digital marketing today. Imagine trying to be an expert in content marketing, acquisition and retention marketing, brand management, word-of-mouth, customer advocacy, paid media, reputation management and viral marketing -- all across five different media channels and dozens of accounts. This is a day in the life of a social media manager. Due to its complexity, social media is also one of the least understood of all marketing channels. Learnings around social media management are largely limited to high-level best pract [...]

Vine Introduces Loop Counts To Show How Many Times A Video Has Been Viewed

vine-loops Twitter's six-second video platform Vine was updated today to include "loop counts" to show how many times videos have been viewed on the network. Loop counts are visible on the desktop version of the site and on updated iOS and Android apps that are being released today. The updated mobile apps also feature a new design, "offering you bigger edge-to-edge videos and a cleaner view of likes and comments," according a post on Vine's blog. Because Vine started compiling loop data on April 3, videos created before that date will display a "+" next to the loop count to show that the actua [...]

Twitter Shopping Coming Soon? “Buy Now” Buttons Seen In The Wild

twitter-buy-shopping-featured Evidence of Twitter plans to enable users to make purchases by clicking on tweets surfaced Monday afternoon. "Buy now" buttons appeared in several tweets apparently generated by the shopping app Fancy, Re/code's Jason Del Rey reported. The buttons only showed up on mobile devices and are no longer visible. Re/code reported that "tapping on them didn’t do anything. But Re/code did speak to someone who said that tapping on the button earlier on Monday did lead to a checkout page opening up within the Twitter app. Re/code could not replicate that experience." This isn't the first time Fan [...]
