Vine Adds Trending Hashtags To Aid Content Discovery

Vine has announced a small tweak that it hopes will help users discover content: trending hashtags. They appear on the Explore area, immediately below the existing group of pre-populated "popular" hashtag suggestions. There's currently 12 trending hashtags to choose from, and there's no app update involved -- you should see them now if you have the Vine app installed. Vine's Colin Kroll explains how it works: To surface that content, we’re introducing trending hashtags, which show you the fastest-rising hashtags on Vine. These hashtags signify those that have moved up quickly in popul [...]

SocialCentiv Wins More Than 1,000 Clients Since SXSW Product Launch

The marketing technology company HipLogiq launched their newest social media software SocialCentiv at last month's SXSW Conference. Within 30 days after its launch, the company says more than 1,000 companies had become customers. Designed for small to medium sized businesses, SocialCentiv claims to help companies identify potential customers on social media sites like Twitter, allowing them to reply to social media conversations with location-based offers. When someone uses an offer, SocialCentiv emails a referral incentive reward to the new customer. The software also includes reporting op [...]

EMarketer: Google Still Owns Mobile Ad Market, But Facebook Has Largest Share Of Mobile Display Ad Dollars

According to eMarketer, mobile advertising will reach $7.29 billion by the end of this year with Google projected to take home more than half, earning $3.9 billion in US mobile ad revenue for 2013. According to the report, US mobile advertising grew 178 percent last year and is expected to grow 77.3 percent this year, a five fold increase since 2011. Mobile ad dollars represent display, search and messaging-based formats served on mobile devices. Mobile advertising will continue to climb dramatically, with an expected $27.13 billion in total mobile ad revenue by 2017, just under 45 percent [...]

Twitter Updates Its Mobile Apps To Support New Twitter Cards

Those new Twitter Card formats that the company just announced last night? They're coming to Twitter's mobile apps and mobile.twitter.com. Twitter just announced an update to both its official Android and iOS apps, as well as to the mobile website, saying that all will very shortly support photo galleries, apps and product listings inside individual tweets. Those are the three new content types that can be included in tweets via Twitter Cards. Twitter's Android app is also getting a new design that the company says reflects a native Android experience: wider and taller timelines that [...]

Twitter Announces 3 New Twitter Cards At Developer Event

With a packed house in Twitter's employee cafeteria Tuesday night, the company announced an important expansion of "Twitter Cards" -- the technology that adds rich content inside a tweet. These were first called expanded tweets when Twitter launched the feature in June 2012. About four months later, Twitter announced that it already had more than 2,000 partners using the content-rich tweets. Last night, Twitter told developers that they eventually want to have hundreds of different card types. But for now, there are three new types of Twitter Cards: App, Product and Gallery. Those join t [...]

Twitter Relaunches Its Twitter For Business Site With More Content, New Video

Twitter has relaunched its Twitter For Business website with a new look, plus additional content that Twitter hopes will help businesses learn how to build a successful presence there. The how-to content is separated for new or advanced business users, and case studies are organized by size of business and industry. And, of course, there's plenty of information about Twitter's advertising options and how to get started with them. Twitter has also published a new video that, in my opinion, is the most effective messaging the company has offered yet for businesses -- not just why, but [...]

All The News That’s Fit To Tweet

The last few years has seen the rise of what are known as "acqhires," where start-ups are bought for their talent and tech, rather than the product itself. The most recent and impressive example of this was the decision by Yahoo! to pay a rumoured $30 million to buy Summly, an app with less than a million downloads and its team of five -- led by its photogenic founder, 17-year-old Nick D’Aloisio. Whilst this will undoubtedly inspire any number of teenagers to develop their own app, it also highlights other trends around how content is being created and consumed, which will have impo [...]

EMarketer: Google Takes Back Top Spot In 2012, Out-Selling Facebook In Digital Display Ads

Google took the lead in US digital display ad revenue last year, earning $2.26 billion. After coming in second to Facebook in 2011, Google outsold their top competitor in 2012, selling $80 million more than Facebook's $2.18 billion. In last week's digital display ad earnings report, eMarketer predicts Google will continue to lead Facebook and Yahoo, earning an estimated $3.11 billion in digital display ad revenue by year's end. The overall US display advertising market is expected to grow 18.1 percent in 2013, with Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL forecasted to earn a combined [...]

Twitter’s April Fools Joke: Consonants-Only In Basic Service, Vowels Cost $5/Month

While Google has spent all of Easter Sunday rolling out its April Fools' Day jokes, Twitter is getting into the act tonight, too, with a gag that both harkens back to the original spelling of its name and will remind you of the Wheel of Fortune game show. Twitter's joke is that it's shifting to a two-tiered service with basic accounts being free, but only being able to tweet with consonants, and a new premium level that includes the use of vowels for $5 per month. If President Obama had been on the basic plan, this Twitter mockup shows what the most retweeted tweet ever would've looked l [...]

Vine Adds Video Embedding, Expands Social Sharing

Even though there've already been some clever brand uses of Vine, the reality is that Twitter's six-second video sharing app has had an extremely limited feature set. That's starting to change today with a small-but-important update to Vine's iOS app and its video post pages. Each video now has embed code for using on other websites, and can also be shared directly to Twitter and/or Facebook. Plus, as I'll explain below, there's a smart privacy feature built-in. The social sharing has already existed, but only for a user's own video uploads. Now, every video can potentially be shared eit [...]

Survey: 71% Of Hashtag Users Are Using Hashtags From Their Mobile Device

According to a recent mobile hashtag survey by RadiumOne, 58 percent of respondents said they use hashtags on a regular basis, and 70 percent of the hashtag users are doing so from their mobile device. RadiumOne's survey evaluated how consumers perceive, value, and use hashtags. Of the 494 survey respondents, 71 percent were female and 44 percent, middle-aged. (RadiumOne noted that while social media use is most predominant with 18 to 24-year olds, comScore credits middle-aged women as the group most responsible for growth in social media site usage.) Another key insight from RadiumO [...]

Report: Twitter Will Near $1 Billion In Ad Revenue In 2014

In just 3 years, it's estimated that Twitter's global ad revenue will have increased by nearly tenfold. In 2011, the popular social networking service raked in 139.5 million dollars, while the newest projection from eMarketer is for $950 million in global revenue in 2014. While the revenue number is skyrocketing, the overall growth of Twitter ad revenue is not surprisingly retarding over time as it matures. The near $1 billion ad revenue in 2014 will signal a 63% growth from 2013, down from the 102.2% estimated growth this year. The biggest revenue driver on Twitter's ad growth is [...]

Wolverine Film Director Premieres First Teaser On Twitter’s Vine

Twitter's fledgling Vine video app got a nice boost yesterday when James Mangold, director of the upcoming The Wolverine, premiered six seconds of the film as a Vine video. It seems to be the first time a major motion picture has used Vine to premiere film footage, bypassing the traditional release of a full-length trailer. That trailer isn't due to premiere until tomorrow, giving Vine a two-day advance window. Mangold coined the term "tweaser" to describe the six-second video in a tweet that's now been retweeted more than a thousand times and favorited more than 250 times. The tweaser. [...]

Twitter Planning Developers-Only Platform Event Next Week

Twitter is inviting developers to a private "mobile-oriented platform event" next week at its headquarters in San Francisco. "We've been working on some exciting new features for the Twitter platform," the registration page says, "and we'd like to share those with you." Twitter has had a contentious relationship with some developers since it began to tighten its API rules last summer. The company eventually explained its developer ecosystem vision, which gave developers a road map for the kind of products the company wants to see going forward on the Twitter platform. Members of the p [...]

Calendar Live Enables Twitter Ad Targeting During TV Shows And Events

A new Twitter ad-buying platform aims to take Social TV advertising to the next level. As Adweek and other outlets have reported, TBG Digital's Calendar Live lets marketers choose TV shows and schedule targeted promoted tweets to run when those shows air. Calendar Live is one of the first tools released that uses the new Twitter ad API, which was launched last month to make it easier to run promoted tweets. With Calendar Live ad buyers can select TV shows and live events on roughly 35 channels by date and times and then add additional demographic or interest targeting criteria of the second [...]

Twitter Turns Seven Years Old Today #HappyBirthday #Twitter7

Today marks seven years since Jack Dorsey, Twitter's creator, sent the very first tweet, kicking-off a social media  phenomena that has grown to 200 million active users sending more than 400 million tweets daily. Dorsey served as Twitter's CEO until 2008 when he became the company's chairman, and Evan Williams took over the role. In 2010, Dick Costolo, who had previously served as COO, became the new CEO after Williams stepped down. Costolo continues to the lead the company today. Since its inception in 2006, Twitter has become one of the top ten most visited websites in the world, off [...]

Study: Correlation Between Tweets And TV Ratings

A huge percentage of TV watchers (as much as 80 percent) are now on a "second screen" during a program, though they may not necessarily be engaged in a "social conversation" about the show they are watching. They may be shopping, writing emails or reading news, instead. However, a new study from SocialGuide (and Nielsen) found that Twitter activity and conversations were positively correlated with TV ratings. Twitter was one of three "statistically significant variables" associated with positive TV ratings. The other two were past ratings and TV advertising (on behalf of the show). Ni [...]

A 15-Second Peek Into Twitter’s Future With Video “Instant Replays”

This week, Twitter introduced video "instant replay" for March Madness. By following the NCAA's @marchmadness account you can catch highlights from all of the college basketball games within a few minutes of them being broadcast. This is, of course, great for fans who can't watch or miss games featuring their favorite teams. However, it's much more significant in terms of Twitter's future and the future of video and video advertising on the site. The clips are a result of a partnership between Turner Broadcasting, Twitter and SnappyTV, which is providing the technology behind the 15-seco [...]

Small Twitter Advertisers Can Now Target Ads Like Big Brands (& Use The Advanced Interface)

Equality has arrived in Twitter's advertising system. The company has announced that small, self-serve advertisers now have access to the same "advanced" dashboard as bigger spenders, and can also target ads using the same options as big brands. These are things that Twitter has offered its bigger advertisers for some time now, but weren't offered to the little guys until today. Little advertisers logging in today will see the "Switch to Advanced" option at the top of the dashboard. And, whether they use that or not, they'll have access to new targeting options that only big advertisers [...]

State Of The News Media: Everything In Decline But Digital

The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s has served up its annual and comprehensive “State of the News Media" report. It offers a mostly pessimistic assessment of the condition and trajectory of various news media in the US today. In perhaps its most striking finding, the report shows how declining revenues leading to repeated cost-cutting have hurt readership and audience loyalty. Based on survey data, the State of the News Media argues that slipping quality and diminished coverage have alienated large numbers of people who've abandoned news publications o [...]
