Twitter Tests A Super Simple Video Sharing Feature For iOS

twitter-logo-600 Who said sharing video has to be tricky? A new test spotted by Peter Kafka at re/code found the ability for iOS users to include pre-selected video clips if they were using hashtags around the upcoming movie "A Million Ways To Die In The West." If a user enters (or begins to enter) the hashtag of the movie name, they are provided video clips form the official movie account @AMillionWays. If the users select the clip then can quickly watch it and "attach" to their Tweet. Like every other 140 character message, once the clip is attached, the user can customize the text in the Tweet to mat [...]

Twitter’s New Mute Feature Means Brand Visibility Is No Sure Thing

twitter-mute-quiet-600 Brand visibility on Twitter became a bit murky today. Twitter announced the rollout of a new "mute" feature. It lets Twitter users continue to follow other accounts, but without actually seeing any of the other account's activity. Not that I'd ever be caught dead following the San Francisco 49ers, but if I did follow them and then decided I don't want to see their Twitter activity for a little while, the mute feature effectively makes them persona non grata for as long as I decide. So what exactly happens when you mute another Twitter account? Here's how Twitter explains it: Muti [...]

Ronald McDonald Gets A McMakeover & Begins Tweeting From The @McDonalds Account

ronaldheader McDonalds Corporation has decided to restyle their 51 year old mascot Ronald McDonald and give him access to the McDonald's Twitter account. All you die-hard Ronald fans that love the iconic look can relax. The changes to the mascot themselves are quite simple. The paratrooper jumpsuit has turned into quasi-human clothing including vests, jackets with the large clown shoes left untouched.  The facepaint, perfectly quaffed fire-hydrant red hear and color scheme are all staying intact. In addition to the semi-modern update Ronald will be Tweeting through the @McDonalds account. Tweets [...]

Huge Header Images, Pinned Tweets & Better Filters Highlight Twitter’s New Profile Design

twitter-new-profile-600 Last month we found out that one of the biggest reasons that folks quit Twitter is due to the lack of sorting, filtering and media. Today Twitter has announced new profile pages that should curtail concerns thanks to a handful of bold new features. The most noticeable change is the colossal profile header picture that spans full width across the monitor. While users may notice the header first, some of the biggest functionality that will appease users falls beneath. New profiles will allow users to pin Tweets to the top of the page, something that disrupts the chronological timeline for the [...]

R.I.P Retweet? Twitter Experiment Features “Share” Button Instead of “Retweet”

Twitter-Large The days of Retweeting may be numbered. Twitter has been testing more mainstream verbiage by replacing "Retweet" with "Share."  Twitter has been quite active in tweaking the user interface as of late. Last week, "views" were spotted and yesterday, we saw the introduction of tagging without adding a Twitter handle in the Tweet. Eli Langer of CNBC complied a custom timeline with examples of the share button in the wild (warning - some examples may contain NFSW language): Goodbye, Retweet? // Studies have shown that many users find Twitter too difficult to understand. This test is g [...]

Twitter Adds Photo Tags That Will Notify Others (Yet Won’t Count Toward Your 140 Characters)

Phototagging-Twitter Imagine Ellen trying to tag everyone in her Oscar selfie and still having room enough to insert a joke about Bradley Cooper's arm length. It wouldn't happen. Until now, the only way to notify a user that they've been included in a photo is to make sure that their Twitter handle is included in the body of the Tweet. Until now. Twitter has announced that users will have the ability to tag up to 10 people in a photo without burning through any of the precious 140 characters. A new feature will soon be rolling out in the updated versions of the app that will allow users to see a "Who's in t [...]

Twitter’s Promoted Accounts Moving Into Timelines On Desktop

twitterPromote Twitter's Promoted Account advertising is about to get a bit more prominent. As reported first in TechCrunch, Promoted Accounts recently started appearing in Timelines on the desktop version of Twitter. Twitter confirmed the change with us today, saying it's a natural enhancement to the product it launched in December. It will be rolled out soon to all advertisers. At first, though, accounts that opted for the boost -- which can be targeted by topic or geography -- had had only appeared in Timelines on mobile devices and in the who to follow area in the desktop sidebar. Then last mo [...]

The account is set to private and my request to follow a few hours ago hasn't been approved yet. We caught wind of the new experiment via TechCrunch's article, [...]

social media As a startup company or small business, it is no longer an option to ignore social media as a means of communication, promotion and possibly even recruitment or revenue. That's true for any business new to the internet, as well. However, diving head-first into an ever-expanding realm of social media networks can feel overwhelming at best. With @TwitterAdTips, Twitter Now Gives Advertising Advice Via Direct Messages

twitter-ad-tips-sm It's fascinating to watch Twitter evolve its direct message system into a marketing and engagement tool. The latest example of that is a new account called @TwitterAdTips that's specifically built for Twitter's advertisers. It promises "personalized tips to improve your Twitter Ads account performance." And it's going to share those tips via Direct Messages. It's the latest of several recent products/accounts that are starting to change what the Direct Message (DM) system can do. In June, Twitter launched the @MagicRecs account that sends content and user recommendations via DM ba [...]

New @EventParrot Twitter Experiment Delivers Breaking News Via Direct Message

twitter-blue-bird-alert Twitter isn't saying anything officially, but by all appearances the company has launched a new experiment that could increase user engagement and retention. The experiment is simple: Anyone that follows the @EventParrot account will start to get breaking news delivered via direct messages. It functions much the same as the @MagicRecs experiment that Twitter launched this summer. I followed the account late last night, and this DM arrived overnight: A Twitter spokesperson declined to say if the account is official or not, but you can be sure it is. The profile begins with, "Thi [...]

Twitter Opens @MagicRecs Recommendations To Android, iPhone Users

twitter-new-logo-blue Twitter is so pleased with its @MagicRecs notification experiment -- and it says the user feedback has been so good -- that it's taking that idea and opening it up to all Twitter for Android and Twitter for iPhone users. What it means is that Twitter users on those two apps will start getting personalized recommendations of tweets and accounts that are popular with the accounts you follow. The notifications will show up via push notification, but that can be changed in your account settings. Unlike the @MagicRecs experiment, there's no need to follow a certain account. Although Twitte [...]

Apple CEO Tim Cook Starts Tweeting, Gets Verified & Scores 75K+ Followers In 2 Hours

tim-cook-apple-200px Apple doesn't have a rich track record when it comes to social media activity, but that changed a bit when its CEO, Tim Cook, started tweeting today. Cook is using his @tim_cook username. There's already another Tim Cook using @timcook, but that account has been inactive since 2009. Apple's Tim Cook didn't actually join Twitter today; as MacRumors reports, that account was created back in July but sat inactive until today. Cook had an obvious reason to get social: Apple began selling its new 5s and 5c iPhones around the world today. He and other Apple officials hit the streets early t [...]

Twitter Gives Verified Users New Spam & Verified-Only Filters For Mentions

twitter-new-logo-blue Twitter's verified users have two new filtering options on their "Connect" tab that are aimed at weeding out spam and making it easier to communicate with other verified users. The two new filters are labeled "Filtered" and "Verified." In an email to verified users, Twitter explained how both tabs works: If you click on "filtered," you will see a new feed based on an algorithm we use to filter out spam. Clicking on the "verified" tab will give you a stream of Tweets from verified users only. The "All" option shows the standard, unfiltered look at the user's mentions. Here's a screens [...]
