Step-By-Step: How To Download All Your Tweets With The New Twitter Archive Service

twitter-bird-featured Gone will be the days of scrolling through pages and pages of your Tweets or Twitter's clunky search to find something you once posted. Twitter is in the process of rolling out a "Download all your Tweets" feature, which has been formally announced today on the Twitter Blog. To get your archive, go to the Settings area and look for the new "Your Twitter archive" feature: Due to high demand, don't be surprised if you get an error message like this: But keep trying, until you get a success screen that offers a link you can use to download the archive: You'll then get an email like th [...]

Twitter Switching Everyone To New Profiles In Two Days

twitter-new-logo-blue If you prefer your old/current Twitter profile format, you've got about 48 hours left to enjoy it. Twitter says it's going to convert all user profile pages over to the new, image-heavy design beginning on Wednesday, December 12th. This is the big change that Twitter announced on NBC's Today show back in September. I haven't updated my personal Twitter profile page yet, but we quickly updated the @marketingland account to look like this: If you still plan to hold out and not upload some custom image for the top of your profile, Twitter says it'll show a gray image in that space b [...]

Twitter Quietly Launches A User Directory

twitter-bird-city-geo-featured You may not have noticed the link, but it's there in the footer of Twitter's home page if you're logged out: "Directory." It's a link to Twitter's unannounced user directory, an alphabetical collection of all Twitter account holders from A to Z that also includes profiles with non-Latin character names. Twitter launched the user directory "a few weeks ago," according to a spokesperson, but hasn't made a formal announcement about it. That's likely because it exists more for search engines than for Twitter users -- a topic that I cover today in my Search Engine Land article, Twitter’ [...]

Up Close With Twitter’s New Header Photos For Profiles

twitter-header-marketingland-featured In case you missed the big announcement on the Today Show yesterday morning, Twitter has updated profiles with a new Timeline-like header photo that will appear across platforms, transitioning the social channel to become more visual and image-centric. How To Update Your Twitter Profile Header There isn't an obvious "update" on your profile, though, you'll need to go into your account settings and make these changes yourself (take it from someone who waited an hour to see if the roll out would "hit" my account.) To get the new look, you'll need to log in, go to the gear icon in the top right [...]

Twitter Announces New Image-Heavy Look On The Today Show

Ryan-Seacrest-Twitter This morning's Today show promised to unveil big changes that are happening with Twitter. Twitter's CEO,  Dick Costolo, sat down with Matt Lauer & Ryan Screast to chat about the "big" new changes. The biggest change? Making twitter more visual and engaging. In order to achieve this, Twitter has released a "timeline-y" feel for profiles that feature a large image at the top. The main image now displays the users info (Twitter handle, account name & description) over the new feature image. Costolo stated that: "what we've hear over and over again from our users is that they [...]

Zeppelin Beats Space Needle For Biggest Twitter Hashtag Title

topthis Sometimes, it is the size of your hashtag that matters. In Seattle this week, the Space Needle launched a contest that will let one person place his/her own design atop the iconic structure for six months. And one of the ways the Needle is promoting the contest is with a Twitter campaign around the #topthis hashtag -- which has also been painted on top of the Space Needle. [caption id="attachment_19767" align="alignnone" width="600"] Courtesy the Space Needle[/caption] The hashtag and campaign has already gotten pretty heavy press coverage in Seattle, with news helicopters showing how [...]

A Look At The Dark Side Of Twitter Popularity: The Paid Follower Economy

twitter-follow-featured The sad reality of Twitter is that the majority of users believe that a user's number of Twitter followers is a metric of affluence. Of course, this perception as opened up a market of purchasing popularity, or buying Twitter followers. Presidential candidates, national journalists and TV stars have been accused of artificially inflating their follower counts through purchases. A new post from Barracuda Labs takes a look a bit further at some of the stats around the artificial follower economy, and the results are quite staggering. Baraccuda uncovered 20 different sellers of Twi [...]

Get Off My Lawn! Twitter, Buddy Media Launch Age-Screening Of Followers

child-adult-clothes Nevermind kicking kids off the lawn; some brands want (and need) to keep kids off their Twitter follower lists. That's now possible thanks to a partnership between Twitter and Buddy Media that gives anyone -- not just brands -- with a Twitter account the ability to screen the age of their followers. To make it happen, brands have to begin by signing up for Buddy Media's Age Screening service, which can be done via The content there explains that there's an approval process, which suggests that regular folks (non-brands like me, for example) will be a lower priority tha [...]

Twitter Releases A Toggle-able Profile View So Users Can Hide Replies

twitter-logo-2012-new Sometimes when visiting a Twitter profile page users can be inundated with a list of reply Tweets to other users instead of seeing what someone is up to.  This reply-heavy timeline typically ocurs during back and forth exchanges.  Today Twitter has announced the release of a reply-free user profile option to help users cut through the clutter and conversations. When visiting a profile page users will be given the option to either view all Tweets from a user or showing "No replies": If you are following both a user and the person they are exchanging with, you will still see the ex [...]

Twitter’s “Tailored Suggestions” Will Use Widget & Button Data To Make Better Recommendations

Currently new Twitter users visit the site and are all recommended nearly the same accounts to follow.  This will soon be changing thanks to new "tailored suggestions."  So not everyone will be advised to follow Justin Bieber, Katy Perry or one of the Kardashians.  The new functionality will match up top accounts with information collected from the user.  So those that like sports might not have Paris Hilton recommended to them. When displaying the list of tailored suggestions, a list of tweets from the accounts can be viewed to provide a better sampler platter for the user: Cu [...]

Do Your Employees Have Multiple Social Media Accounts?

typing on computer Thanks to the rise of social media, with millions of people around the world having Facebook and Twitter accounts, people have begun wising up about their own social media "personas." Many working professionals realize the difference between what they want to share via social media and what they should share, but there has been a new trend towards professionals creating separate accounts -- one for work life and one for personal life. Is Segmentation Effective? Having two different Facebook and Twitter accounts can be a benefit for employees who want to network with prospective company em [...]

Twitter’s 6th Birthday: 140 Million Active Users, 340 Million Tweets A Day

twitter-6-birthday-featured Happy birthday to Twitter, which turns six years old today. It began innocently enough, with Jack Dorsey sending out a tweet that simply said, "just setting up my twttr" (which is what the service was called in those days, when vowels were often seen as unhip). Today, Twitter says it's now surpassed 140 million active users -- up from about 100 million back in September. There are also about 340 million tweets per day. (That's about 4,000 tweets per second, by the way.) Twitter is also now available in 28 languages around the world. Aside from numbers, there's Twitter's continued encr [...]

E-Commerce On Twitter Brand Pages? Later This Year, Report Says

Twitter logo Twitter users may soon be able to do business with their favorite companies from right inside the company's Twitter brand page. E-commerce capability is reportedly one of several "big changes" that's coming to Twitter brand pages, according to an Ad Age article today. Ad Age cites a trio of executives who say that Twitter will add new capabilities to brand pages including e-commerce, sweepstakes and contests -- allowing consumers to interact with companies without leaving Twitter's website. The product will allow app developers to build experiences on Twitter, much the way they do on Fac [...]

Not Surprisingly, Twitter Is The Most Popular Brand Page On Twitter

The most popular Twitter brand pages are out and the results are a mixed bag.  Thanks to ZoomSphere, a social statistics firm, all of the Twitter brand pages can be tracked by popularity. Out of the top 20 pages 8 are bands/artists, 6 brands, 4 celebrities, 1 news source and 1 Government entity (The White House).  The international appeal of Twitter shows through as two of the top 6 pages belong to non-US singers.  In maybe the least shocking revelation, Twitter was the most popular page on Twitter with 7,685,762 fans. Not all celebrities/brands have actual pages, as they are o [...]

Twitter Expands Enhanced Brand Profiles – And Not Just For Advertisers

Twitter-Logo As expected, Twitter has expanded its enhanced brand profiles product to several new account holders today -- and it's not only being rolled out to advertisers. In a statement, Twitter says the enhanced profiles are rolling out to non-advertiser organizations and even individuals. "Enhanced profile pages will continue to roll out to advertising partners, as well as other select partners, charities, media organizations, and individuals." Twitter tells us that it doesn't "have a specific number or full list" of accounts that were upgraded today to the enhanced profiles, but some of the [...]

Report: Twitter Will Begin Enhanced Profile Roll-Out In February

There are a handful of companies who currently have enhanced profile pages including, Coca-Cola, Bing and Staples.  The new pages will allow for custom header images, featured (or promoted content), and a more consistent  mobile experience. 8 Things I Hope Are On Twitter’s 2012 To-Do List

twitter-to-do-featured After spending the past couple years dealing with changes at the top of its organizational structure, as well as seemingly innumerable changes to its design and user interface, Twitter seems to be in a more stable position as 2012 begins. Activity also seems to be growing -- several of Twitter's busiest days have happened just within the past couple months (as measured by the tweets-per-second metric). I'm hoping this means the company can focus on several areas where there's still room and need for improvement. I don't claim to know what Twitter has on its 2012 to-do list, but here's w [...]

The Echo Nest is the leading platform for music content and powers over 200+ apps and services including Spotify, iHeartRadio, EMI and MOG.  With the new Twitter distribution program, Tweets from artists will be   [...]

Fake Mrs. Rupert Murdoch Points To Hole In Twitter’s Verification System

Twitter logo Twitter's method of verifying official accounts is a mysterious and sometimes messy system, and it was exposed as such over the weekend by the case of "fake Mrs. Rupert Murdoch." If you're just joining the story, one day after News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch joined Twitter, a man in London set up a Twitter account in the name of his wife, Wendi Deng. Although the man is now clearly labeling it a spoof, both News Corp and Twitter originally thought it was real. Twitter went so far as to give it the official blue "Verified" label. But all parties involved announced today that the [...]

Boston Celtics: The First Pro Team To Advertise Twitter On Their Home Court?

twitter-celtics Did the Boston Celtics just become the first pro sports team to advertise Twitter on their home court/playing surface? That seems to be the case, thanks to the addition of the @celtics Twitter handle that showed up on the parquet floor during Wednesday night's pre-season basketball game against the Toronto Raptors. Peter Stringer, the Celtics' Director of Interactive Media, posted the photo on Twitter Wednesday and wondered if any NBA or pro sports team had put its Twitter username on their home court (or playing surface). Is this a first in the NBA? Or pro sports? @Celtics is of [...]
