Twitter Expands Keyword Targeting Choices For Promoted Tweets

Advertisers using Twitter's Promoted Tweets product have new keyword options to target their tweets in Twitter's search results, along with a new tool to import keywords from other online ad platforms. The company is launching three keyword matching options, along with the ability to use negative keywords, too. Search marketers will be familiar with the keyword matching options: exact match phrase match keyword match Using negative keywords acts similarly to other platforms; advertisers can indicate keywords that they don't want their ads appearing next to in Twitter search resu [...]

Twitter Giving Out $1 Million In Ads To Lure New Small Biz Advertisers

Twitter's push to expand its advertiser base continues today with news that the company will give away up to a million dollars in ad credits to small business owners that haven't advertised on Twitter before. In its announcement, Twitter says that it'll give $100 credits to the first 10,000 qualified small businesses. The signup form details those qualifications: the business must be U.S.-based, have a complete Twitter profile (including profile image), tweet regularly, have at least 20 followers and be a new advertiser. Twitter says the giveaway is its way of supporting the Shop Small a [...]

Twitter Launches Gender Targeting For Advertisers

Twitter advertisers can now target their promotions based on gender. This type of targeting join the existing mobile, geographic and interest-based targeting options already available. Gender targeting may sound a bit strange since Twitter users don't have to declare if they're male or female anywhere in the account settings, but Twitter says that it's confident the science behind the new targeting is strong. Similar to our approach to interest targeting, we're able to understand gender by taking public signals users offer on Twitter, such as user profile names or the accounts she or he [...]

Twitter Offering $100 To Get Users To Advertise

This email arrived in my In box just a few moments ago: As you can plainly see, Twitter has started offering users $100 in an effort to encourage more advertising sign-ups. What's not clear to me -- and I've reached out to Twitter Communications to learn more -- is who all is getting these emails and how many are being sent. Twitter's self-serve ad product is still invite-only, and was originally focused on small business owners. But the company has been sending out invites to more accounts: the account for my (non-profit) U2 fan site was invited to advertise a couple days ago, and [...]

Poll The Twitterverse With Twitter’s New Brand Survey Ads

A handful of selected Twitter advertisers will have access to a new polling tool, Twitter Surveys. Twitter has teamed up with Nielsen to help ad partners measure brand impact across twitter. The goal of the new units is to allow brands to gain better insights on purchase intent, overall awareness and marketing metrics. This is a new ad unit that will appear directly within a user's activity feed; the same format as a Promoted Tweet. Surveys can be completed directly within the Tweet itself on both mobile and desktop views.' A "small set" of advertisers have been invited to test [...]

Twitter Broke Another Tweet Record And, Sorry TechCrunch, But You Bet It Matters

The first U.S. Presidential debate on Wednesday night led to yet another -- and completely unsurprising -- record for Twitter activity. The Twitter communications team spread the news shortly after the debate ended, saying that the debate topped activity during both the Republican and Democratic National Convention and was "the most tweeted about event in US political history." That last bit is pretty cheeky. US political history? Since Twitter's only been around for six years, I'd say that different wording was in order, but I wouldn't go so far as to throw the whole idea of tweet miles [...]

Romney Campaign Promoted Tweet Appearing On Critical #RomneyStrength Hashtag

Have you checked out the #RomneyStrength hashtag on Twitter yet? If you have, you'll know it's mostly sarcastic comments about the Republican presidential candidate, mocking a news story about a Romney advisor who essentially said the attack in Libya would never have happened if Romney were president. It looks like the Romney campaign hasn't noticed this Twitter meme, though, or at least not looked at it very closely, because the campaign has purchased a promoted tweet that appears when you search for the hashtag. It's not clear whether the campaign specifically targeted #romneystren [...]

EMarketer Hikes Its Twitter Ad Revenue Estimate 50 Percent Higher

Twitter's worldwide ad revenue is expected to reach $807.5 million by 2014 according to a new eMarketer projection. That's a 50 percent hike over its estimate from earlier this year. Ultimately, eMarketer estimates that Twitter will account for 12.7 percent of all US social advertising revenues by 2014 -- up from 5.5 percent last year. eMarketer is now estimating Twitter ad revenues to grow from $288.3 million this year to $545.2 million in 2013, and ultimately to $807.5 million by 2014. These estimates would represent year-over-year gains of 89 percent and 48 percent over the next two y [...]

Twitter Prompting Users To Advertise On Twitter

Twitter is now prompting ordinary Twitter users to advertise on Twitter. About ten minutes ago, I went to Twitter.com and I was greeted at the top of my timeline with a message from Twitter to try out their advertising options. The message read, "Advertise on Twitter," followed by "grow your followers and help them spread the word about you." It then had a blue "Start now" button. Here is a screen shot of the message: Clicking on "Start now" would take you to ads.twitter.com. I am not sure if Twitter is targeting these at accounts that have over a certain number of followers [...]

Twitter Makes More Mobile Ad Revenue Than Apple, Facebook — eMarketer

Data aggregator and forecaster eMarketer has released a US mobile advertising projection that shows Twitter making more mobile ad revenue than mobile ad network Millennial Media, as well as Facebook and Apple's iAd "network." However in 2013 Facebook mobile revenues are forecast to surpass Twitter's: Overall the firm says that mobile advertising in the US will be worth $2.6 billion by the end of 2012. The IAB said that mobile advertising was worth just under $1.7 billion in North American in 2011. Source: IAB (2012) Mobile paid search is the largest single chunk of mobile adve [...]

Twitter Releases API 1.1, Says It May Include Ads Later

Three weeks after announcing its plans for a new API and associated developer rules, Twitter today formally released API 1.1 to developers. Along with the new API, Twitter has also updated the API Terms (what Twitter calls its "Rules of the Road") and display requirements. In his blog post, Twitter's Jason Costa went out of his way to clarify one of the developer community's biggest complaints about the more restrictive API -- the 100,000 user token limit. Costa says that will only apply to certain apps: The 100,000 user token limit applies only to the small set of clients replicati [...]

Twitter Debuts Interest-Based Ad Targeting, Lowers Min. Bid To One Cent

This is a big step for Twitter's advertising business: The company has announced that advertisers can now target Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts based on user interests. At the same time, Twitter says it's also lowering the minimum bid on its auction-based ads to one cent. Two Types Of Interest-Based Targeting Twitter is offering two types of interest-based targeting. One involves choosing from more than 350 categories -- things like Movies & Television, Personal Finance, Sports and others. Each top-level interest category offers a number of more specific sub-categories, as shown i [...]

Twitter Quietly Expands Its Small Business Ad Program Beyond American Express Users

Twitter has begun inviting additional small businesses to use its self-serve advertising platform, and has relaxed one of the main requirements to participate: American Express cards are no longer required. A Twitter spokesperson has confirmed to Marketing Land that the program is now available to more than just American Express cardholders; advertisers can use that or a VISA card. HasOffers first reported that the program has expanded. That article suggests that there's a minimum threshold of 5,000 followers for receiving an invite; Twitter declined to comment on how it selects who can [...]

Washington Post Triples Engagement Rate With Twitter’s New Targeted Ads

One advertiser is already reaping the benefits from being able to publish Promoted Tweets to specific Twitter users without first having to publish the tweet to all of its followers. The Washington Post is one of the advertisers that's been testing Twitter's new targeting options that were just formally announced last week. And, according to numbers shared with us by SocialCode, which counts the Post as a client, the newspaper's results have been promising. SocialCode examined a sampling of tweets that were linked to articles on the Washington Post Social Reader. Some Promoted Tweets wer [...]

Twitter’s Promoted Tweets Become A Pure Ad Product

Twitter has announced a pretty substantial change to its Promoted Tweets ad product -- it seems subtle, but it fundamentally changes what a Twitter ad is. In a nutshell, Twitter advertisers no longer have to publish a standard tweet that's visible to all followers before it becomes a Promoted Tweet. They can now specifically create ads and target Twitter users via the existing options available in the Promoted Tweets program -- including geographic targeting and mobile vs. desktop targeting. Twitter's been testing this with companies like British Airways, which showed this ad only in the [...]

Nike Has Twitter Campaign Banned In The UK

British footballers Jack Wilshere and Wayne Rooney recently tweeted about their resolution to #makeitcount, a new Nike campaign slogan.  However, in the process of making it count, they forgot to make it sponsored: The advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) took heed to the tweets as they failed to make the sponsorship clear and "obviously identifiable."  The ASA stated the following about the #Nike tweets: "We considered there was nothing obvious in the tweets to indicate they were Nike marketing communications." The tweets were found to breach the advertising [...]

No Surprise: Twitter Ads Will Be Going Global

Twitter is planning to expand its advertising products to as many as 50 countries by the end of this year. The news comes from an article in The Guardian about Jack Dorsey's and Dick Costolo's comments today at a news conference in Cannes, France. Twitter itself hasn't announced the expansion on its advertising blog yet, but The Twitter Advertising account on Twitter did retweet the Guardian's article earlier today. The Guardian says that Twitter is planning to launch three ad products -- Promoted Tweets, Promoted Accounts and Promoted Trends -- into Brazil and other Latin American count [...]

Four Of The Internet’s Biggest Ad Sellers Join In Ads Integrity Alliance

Along with spam and malware, bad ads -- whether they're for illegal or counterfeit goods, delivering malware or trying to scam users -- are a scourge on the internet, eroding trust and poisoning the environment for legitimate marketers. A few months ago, folks at some of the internet's biggest ad sellers -- AOL, Google, Facebook, and Twitter -- began talking about collaborating to fight this universal problem. The result is the Ads Integrity Alliance, an industry initiative launching today under the aegis of non-profit StopBadware, and also involving the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) [...]

Twitter May Top $1 Billion Sales Revenue In 2014, Bloomberg Says

Bloomberg News is citing two sources "with knowledge of the matter" in a report that suggests Twitter could reach $1 billion in sales revenue by 2014. If accurate, that would about double previous estimates of Twitter's sales revenues. Earlier this year, eMarketer suggested that Twitter's 2014 ad revenue would be about $540 million, up from an estimated $260 million this year. Although Twitter launched in 2006, it didn't begin to monetize the service until 2010. Critics questioned if the service would ever make money; comedians did, too, with Stephen Colbert famously telling co-founder B [...]
