New @EventParrot Twitter Experiment Delivers Breaking News Via Direct Message

twitter-blue-bird-alert Twitter isn't saying anything officially, but by all appearances the company has launched a new experiment that could increase user engagement and retention. The experiment is simple: Anyone that follows the @EventParrot account will start to get breaking news delivered via direct messages. It functions much the same as the @MagicRecs experiment that Twitter launched this summer. I followed the account late last night, and this DM arrived overnight: A Twitter spokesperson declined to say if the account is official or not, but you can be sure it is. The profile begins with, "Thi [...]

Winning The Social + TV Race: Twitter’s “Live” Beats Facebook’s “DVR”

facebook-twitter-logos-200px This past Sunday's Breaking Bad series finale provided much more than a satisfying ending to loyal fans, it also highlighted the social race for TV integration. After the finale, both Twitter and Facebook rushed to talk about the overall number of updates around the beloved series in an effort to solidify themselves as a credible 2nd screen for TV viewing. Half of Americans visit social networks while watching TV with 1 in 6 Americans posting about it. The "social screen" has officially  arrived. So, who's winning? The New York Times dove into the subject, and it turns out that (at [...]

Twitter Opens @MagicRecs Recommendations To Android, iPhone Users

twitter-new-logo-blue Twitter is so pleased with its @MagicRecs notification experiment -- and it says the user feedback has been so good -- that it's taking that idea and opening it up to all Twitter for Android and Twitter for iPhone users. What it means is that Twitter users on those two apps will start getting personalized recommendations of tweets and accounts that are popular with the accounts you follow. The notifications will show up via push notification, but that can be changed in your account settings. Unlike the @MagicRecs experiment, there's no need to follow a certain account. Although Twitte [...]

pinterest-logo Publishers in women's programming verticals such as food and recipes, home and garden, style and health and wellness have found a deep, high volume source of referral traffic from Pinterest. A new study by Yieldbot, which sees over a 1.5 billion page views per month come through its publisher analytics platform, looks at the impact of social referral traffic on the advertising performance of women's sites. The ad technology firm found that while Pinterest sends oodles of traffic, those visitors don't click on ads at same rate as Facebook referrals. The table below illustrates the overwhe [...]

Twitter Courting TV Networks To “Amplify” Revenues

twitter-tv-200px Twitter executives are in New York this week ("Ad Week") pitching TV networks on its ad products, especially its second screen ad program "Amplify." According to the Wall Street Journal, Twitter is positioning Amplify as part of a bundled TV ad sale: With Amplify, networks post short video replays on Twitter in near-real time. The video is sponsored by a brand. The network and Twitter each get a cut of the ad proceeds.  Amplify was originally introduced earlier this year. TV networks and entertainment companies aggressively market themselves on social media. However Twitter and its hasht [...]

Study: Email Lands More Customers Than Facebook Or Twitter, But Still Fewer Than Organic Search

email-marketing-featured A new report from marketing software provider Custora found that customer acquisitions gained via email marketing has quadrupled since 2009, with email delivering more customers than Facebook or Twitter. According to the report, email accounted for only .88 percent of online customers acquired in 2009, but that number grew to 6.84 percent by Q2 2013. Facebook and Twitter's combined customer acquisitions have accounted for less than one percent this year. Even after an upswing of nearly seven percent during the last four years, email still falls behind organic search, which has accoun [...]

Geo-Targeted Ads Could Be Coming To A Twitter Feed Near You Before The End Of This Year

twitter-map-geotarget-featured While Twitter already offers ads targeting by gender, device, keywords, as well as TV shows, AdAge reports that the social network may be offering ads based on designated latitudes and longitudes, possibly as early as the end of this year. Using the new geo-targeted ad options, brands could drive more in-store traffic by posting tweets to users who are within close range of a specific location via their Twitter mobile app. An end of the year launch could mean new ad possibilities for retailers wanting to push foot-traffic during the holiday shopping season. According to the report on AdAge, [...]

Twitter’s New @MagicRecs Account Promises Content & User Recommendations Via Direct Message

twitter-magic-recs-200px Shhhhhh. It's still pretty hush-hush at the moment, but there's a new Twitter account that aims to increase awareness of activity from your "follow graph" -- i.e., the notable things that are happening in the accounts that you follow. In the process, it also opens the door a tiny bit on the idea of direct messages as a marketing/content channel. More on that in a bit. The @MagicRecs account is about as quiet as an account can be after Twitter CEO Dick Costolo plugged it on Sunday night, saying it's "a product of some great work by the team here. Follow it!" (Despite that, @MagicRecs still h [...]

Twitter Sued By User Who Wants @SunValley Back, Claims Twitter Acted Like Bully

twitter-legal-law Did Twitter unfairly take away Leonard Barshack's handle and give it to Central Idaho ski resort Sun Valley Co.? After using the Twitter handle @sunvalley since 2010, Barshack received an email from Twitter last year notifying him that a report had been filed declaring he was engaging in "non-parody impersonation" with his Twitter handle. The Associated Press reports Twitter claimed Barshack was violating their policy that mandates an account's profile information "make it clear that the creator of the account is not actually the same person or entity," as the subject of the impersonation. [...]

Hashtag Bombs: How Not to Leverage Trending Hashtags

When it comes to social media marketing, many brands and organizations have staked claim to various hashtags. Yet by their nature, hashtags can't be owned. They can’t be wordmarked or copyrighted, either. The reality is that many hashtags are started organically, not by brands themselves but by their customers. Hashtags were once the sole domain of Twitter. Over the years, other social properties began incorporating them as well. Google Plus and Instagram recognize them. Earlier this year, LinkedIn started using them. And soon, they'll become part of Facebook as well. Hashtag Bombs Are S [...]

Surprising Twitter Stories Emerge At Conferences

anne-mccoll-drawing The season of marketing conferences is upon us, which provides opportunities to discuss Twitter marketing with brand-side and agency marketers from near and far. It was at one such conference, the famous SxSW, that Twitter debuted back in 2007. Now that six years has gone by, was Twitter still the talk of the show in 2013? Gemma Craven (@gemsie), the New York Group Director at Social@Ogilvy, suggested that with the recent launch of Twitter's new advertising dashboard, advertising API, the collaboration with AMEX, direct marketing tools for brands, and its prominence as a topic of many pane [...]

Within 30 days after its launch, the company says more than 1,000 companies had become customers. Designed for small to medium sized businesses, SocialCentiv claims to help companies identify potential customers on social media sites like Twitter, allowing them to reply to social media conversations with location-based offers. Twitter Relaunches Its Twitter For Business Site With More Content, New Video

twitter-business-open-featured Twitter has relaunched its Twitter For Business website with a new look, plus additional content that Twitter hopes will help businesses learn how to build a successful presence there. The how-to content is separated for new or advanced business users, and case studies are organized by size of business and industry. And, of course, there's plenty of information about Twitter's advertising options and how to get started with them. Twitter has also published a new video that, in my opinion, is the most effective messaging the company has offered yet for businesses -- not just why, but [...]

Is Social Content Curation The Next “Better” Thing?

Social content curation has blown up in the past year, after a late start that began to show traction around 2007-2008. Pinterest continues to experience massive growth, with Wanelo nipping at its heels. Social media users have gotten smarter when it comes to sharing; many are no longer posting Facebook statuses about what they ate and are instead using social networks to share their passions, ideas, and content they love. Social Media Content Value For Brands The value of content for brands has been slow and time-coming, but businesses are beginning to realize it's not the fact that you [...]

Twitter Touts Its B2B Lead-Gen Capabilities (& Has A New Ad Tool In The Works To Help)

Twitter Logo Twitter's all-out assault on potential advertisers continued today with the latest in a series of blog posts explaining the benefits of doing Twitter ads. Today's target? The B2B community. The company is touting how tweets can have an impact on B2B tech audiences, again using statistics from its recent work with Compete. In this study, Compete examined the online activity of more than 6,000 Twitter users as they visited more than 400 B2B tech sites in late 2012. Two quick snapshot stats: 59 percent of Twitter users visited a B2B tech site during the study period, compared to 40 percent [...]

The #Hashtag Bowl, Game Over: Twitter Mentioned In 50% Of Super Bowl Commercials, Facebook Only 8%, Google+ Shut Out

twitter-football-featured The Baltimore Ravens just beat the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl XLVII in a game that came down to the final seconds. But online, the social network showdown belonged to Twitter in a dominating win over Facebook, Google+ and all other social networks. According to my count, Twitter was mentioned in 26 of 52 national TV commercials -- that's 50 percent of the spots that aired during CBS' game coverage. Facebook was mentioned in only four of those commercials -- about eight percent. Google+, which is reportedly the No. 2 social network in the world, wasn't mentioned at all. YouTube [...]
