With 400 Million Tweets Per Day, Twitter Spending “Inordinate Resources” On Improving Content Discovery

twitter-logo-2012-new Twitter is devoting "an inordinate amount of resources and time" to improve content discovery for its users -- a challenge that's no doubt made more difficult by the service's growing userbase and increased tweet activity. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo told a conference audience this week that Twitter is now seeing more than 400 million tweets per day, up from the 340 million figure that the company revealed in March. CNET reported Costolo's comments from a conference put on by The Economist: Costolo was somewhat more forthcoming about mining the data trove it collects. "The fascinating th [...]

Pew: Daily Twitter Usage Has Quadrupled Since 2010

twitter-bird-featured The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has released new survey based findings about Twitter usage in the US. Overall 15 percent of online adults say they use Twitter, with 8 percent doing so daily. That compares with 13 percent who reported being Twitter users last year. Yet the number of daily Twitter users has doubled since May 2011 and quadrupled since Pew began doing surveys about Twitter in 2010. Pew attributes this increase in daily usage in part to the rise of smartphones. Source: Pew, n=2,253 US adults Twitter's greatest penetration and daily u [...]

Most Mobile Time Spent In Apps: Google Has Top Reach, Facebook Has Highest Engagement

Screen shot 2012-05-08 at 7.23.47 AM Mobile analytics provider Flurry reported previously that people are spending huge amounts of time with mobile apps, more time than with the mobile browser and more time than on the PC. This may seem to some implausible, but comScore adds further credibility to the findings with its first "Mobile Metrix 2.0" report. The data show that "4 in every 5 mobile media minutes" is spent with apps (vs. the mobile browser). Previously comScore had been reporting that apps and the mobile browser have roughly equal audiences. That's still true but the company now confirms that people spend far more tim [...]

Twitter Now Offers Uniform Mobile Web Experience To All

No smartphone? No problem, at least not when it comes to using Twitter on the go. The company has announced an update to its mobile web version at mobile.twitter.com that makes it more uniformly consistent with how smartphone users experience Twitter. It has the same four icon/button menu -- Home, @mentions, Connect (#) and Profile -- that you're already familiar with, and Twitter says its new mobile version is "fast, like a native mobile app; it uses one-third less bandwidth than the previous iteration." That'll be good news for Twitter users in countries where smartphone penetration [...]

Twitter Mobile Ads Can Now Be Targeted By Platform

twitter-logo-square Twitter has announced another incremental step in the development of its ad products: Promoted Tweets can now be targeted to users of specific mobile platforms. Twitter's also announcing that Promoted Tweets are now showing to Blackberry users. That gives advertisers the option to target Promoted Tweets just to iOS, Android or Blackberry users if they wish. Here's a screenshot from Twitter's blog post. Twitter originally expanded Promoted Tweets to mobile devices in late February, but there was no way for advertisers to target mobile users at the time. About three weeks later, the [...]

Twitter Advertisers Can Now Target Promoted Tweet Campaigns To Mobile Users

twitter-logo-square Twitter's advertisers have new targeting capabilities that will let them advertise directly and only to mobile users ... or just to desktop users, if they prefer. The company has just announced an expansion of its mobile Promoted Tweets ad product, and it includes mobile-specific targeting. "...brands can target their campaigns specifically to desktop computers and laptops, iOS, Android, and other mobile devices. Or, the default setting setting simply targets campaigns to users across all devices." Twitter has previously revealed that 55 percent of its active users access Twitter via [...]

How Apple Made Twitter The Poster Child Of Android’s Tablet Failure

apple-logo-black Seemingly taking no chances, Apple didn't just announce cool features in the new iPad. It also took at dig at Android tablets, to show how the iPad is better than they are. Called on behalf of the prosecution: Twitter. Evidence? Twitter's iPad app is beautiful to use, while Twitter offers no similar Android app. It's a true weakness, and it's not just Twitter. Even Google's own Google+ app could be called to testify against Android. Cook: Twitter Is Better On The iPad The testimony happened around 21:50 into the presentation, which you can watch here. Apple CEO Tim Cook shows the Twitter ap [...]

Twitter Ads Go Mobile, But Advertisers Can’t Target That Way (Yet)

twitter-mobile-ads-featured Twitter is expanding its ad inventory with the announcement today that Promoted Tweets are coming soon to the official Twitter apps on the iPhone and Android devices. They're not, at this point, expanding to the iPad. But it's logical to assume they'll eventually make their way to the iPad as the fourth stage of Twitter's ad expansion (which began on Twitter.com, then rolled out to the m.twitter.com mobile website and now includes the iPhone and Android devices). It's an important step for Twitter as it aims to expand its revenue base. The company announced in September that 55 percent [...]
