Topsy Pro Analytics Lets Users Analyze Over 100 Billion Tweets From The Last 2+ Years

Topsy, the popular social search engine, has released a powerful new feature for marketers today deemed Topsy Pro Analytics. Different than the basic analytics offerings announced last year, the new Pro Analytics will allow users to see view and analyze more than 100 billion  Tweets over the past several years. Unlike many social tracking tools, the licence that Topsy has to the Twitter Firehose allows the service to analyze all Tweets, not just a specific set of kephrases being tracked. Specific keyphrases can be mined down to provide more information thanks to the dynamic navigatio [...]

A Look At The Dark Side Of Twitter Popularity: The Paid Follower Economy

The sad reality of Twitter is that the majority of users believe that a user's number of Twitter followers is a metric of affluence. Of course, this perception as opened up a market of purchasing popularity, or buying Twitter followers. Presidential candidates, national journalists and TV stars have been accused of artificially inflating their follower counts through purchases. A new post from Barracuda Labs takes a look a bit further at some of the stats around the artificial follower economy, and the results are quite staggering. Baraccuda uncovered 20 different sellers of Twi [...]

Euro 2012 Sets New Twitter Sports Activity Record

Another major international soccer (football) tournament ... another Twitter record for tweet activity. Sunday's Euro 2012 championship match -- a 4-0 Spain victory over Italy -- set a new record with 15,358 tweets per second (TPS). Twitter says activity hit that level when Spain scored its fourth goal. Overall, the final match produced 16.5 million tweets around the world. The new TPS record breaks the mark set in April during the Champions League semifinal between Barcelona and Chelsea. (Stock image via Shutterstock.com. Used under license.) [...]

Twitter: 60 Percent Of Users Access Via Mobile

Twitter is now saying that 60 percent of its 140-million-person active user base accesses the service via mobile devices. It's the first time the company has updated that important statistic since last September, when Twitter said that 55 percent of what was then 100 million active users were using mobile devices. Twitter shared the stat during a Twitter For Brands event on Thursday, and posted it on Twitter, too, of course: 60% of our 140 million active users access Twitter through mobile - up from 55%. #Twitter4Brands— Twitter Advertising (@TwitterAds) June 7, 2012 Earli [...]

With 400 Million Tweets Per Day, Twitter Spending “Inordinate Resources” On Improving Content Discovery

Twitter is devoting "an inordinate amount of resources and time" to improve content discovery for its users -- a challenge that's no doubt made more difficult by the service's growing userbase and increased tweet activity. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo told a conference audience this week that Twitter is now seeing more than 400 million tweets per day, up from the 340 million figure that the company revealed in March. CNET reported Costolo's comments from a conference put on by The Economist: Costolo was somewhat more forthcoming about mining the data trove it collects. "The fascinating th [...]

Pew: Daily Twitter Usage Has Quadrupled Since 2010

The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has released new survey based findings about Twitter usage in the US. Overall 15 percent of online adults say they use Twitter, with 8 percent doing so daily. That compares with 13 percent who reported being Twitter users last year. Yet the number of daily Twitter users has doubled since May 2011 and quadrupled since Pew began doing surveys about Twitter in 2010. Pew attributes this increase in daily usage in part to the rise of smartphones. Source: Pew, n=2,253 US adults Twitter's greatest penetration and daily u [...]

Most Mobile Time Spent In Apps: Google Has Top Reach, Facebook Has Highest Engagement

Mobile analytics provider Flurry reported previously that people are spending huge amounts of time with mobile apps, more time than with the mobile browser and more time than on the PC. This may seem to some implausible, but comScore adds further credibility to the findings with its first "Mobile Metrix 2.0" report. The data show that "4 in every 5 mobile media minutes" is spent with apps (vs. the mobile browser). Previously comScore had been reporting that apps and the mobile browser have roughly equal audiences. That's still true but the company now confirms that people spend far more tim [...]

Champions League Soccer Breaks Super Bowl’s Record For Twitter Activity

The Super Bowl may be the biggest sporting event in the U.S., but around the world American football doesn't hold a candle to soccer's ... err, football's ... popularity. That was proved true on Twitter yesterday when the Champions League semifinal between Barcelona and Chelsea set a new tweets-per-second (TPS) record for a sporting event. Twitter announced that 13,684 TPS were hitting its platform during the match, breaking the Super Bowl's record of 12,233 TPS set in February. As Twitter becomes more mainstream -- you can hardly watch a TV show of any kind in the U.S. today without [...]

Twitter Madness: Stats For The NCAA Tournament & Championship Game

Historically one of the most Twitter's most "tweetable" subjects has been sporting events.  Last year, 4 of the top 10 events that spurred the most tweets per second were related to sports.  This year's NCAA tournament was no different and @TwitterSports released some stats on Twitter usage throughout the tourney. A chart was released about Twitter usage leading up to the big game last night breaking down the related tweets by day.  Not surprisingly the days with the most tweets were game days while activity slowly trailed off between rounds.  The third most popular day was March 16th [...]

Survey: Only 40 Percent Of Marketers Are Using Google+, But Many Plan To Change That

Marketers have been slow to adopt Google+, with only 40 percent currently using it, but many say they want to learn more about it and plan to increase their use of Google's incipient social network. Facebook, meanwhile, remains the dominant social networking site for marketers, with more than 90 percent adoption. The numbers come from Social Media Examiner's fourth annual survey of marketers and business owners. The January survey collected replies from more than 3,800 marketers around the world, a group that was almost equally split between B2B and B2C marketers. Most Popular Socia [...]

Twitter’s 6th Birthday: 140 Million Active Users, 340 Million Tweets A Day

Happy birthday to Twitter, which turns six years old today. It began innocently enough, with Jack Dorsey sending out a tweet that simply said, "just setting up my twttr" (which is what the service was called in those days, when vowels were often seen as unhip). Today, Twitter says it's now surpassed 140 million active users -- up from about 100 million back in September. There are also about 340 million tweets per day. (That's about 4,000 tweets per second, by the way.) Twitter is also now available in 28 languages around the world. Aside from numbers, there's Twitter's continued encr [...]

Google+ Users Spend 3 Minutes Per Month There, ComScore Tells WSJ

With its users only spending an average of three minutes per month on the site, Google+ is a "virtual ghost town" compared to Facebook and other social networking sites. That's how the Wall Street Journal characterizes Google's social network while reporting new usage stats from comScore. According to comScore, Google+ users averaged only three minutes on the site during January, a pittance compared to Facebook's average of 405 minutes per visitor. Tumblr and Pinterest both saw 89 minutes per user on average, while LinkedIn clocked in at 17 minutes per user and Twitter at 21 minutes. The b [...]

Not Surprisingly, Twitter Is The Most Popular Brand Page On Twitter

The most popular Twitter brand pages are out and the results are a mixed bag.  Thanks to ZoomSphere, a social statistics firm, all of the Twitter brand pages can be tracked by popularity. Out of the top 20 pages 8 are bands/artists, 6 brands, 4 celebrities, 1 news source and 1 Government entity (The White House).  The international appeal of Twitter shows through as two of the top 6 pages belong to non-US singers.  In maybe the least shocking revelation, Twitter was the most popular page on Twitter with 7,685,762 fans. Not all celebrities/brands have actual pages, as they are o [...]

Super Bowl Spike: 12,233 Tweets Per Second Is 300% Above Last Year’s Game

The New York Giants, New England Patriots and Super Bowl XLVI have dethroned Tim Tebow as the sports king of Twitter. Sunday night's Super Bowl set a new sports-related record with 12,233 tweets per second (TPS) as the game ended on a failed "Hail Mary" pass that secured a 21-17 Giants' win over the Patriots. That's more than triple the 4,064 TPS level of last year's Super Bowl. Here's the official @twitter record announcement from Sunday night: The highest Tweets per second #SuperBowl peak came at the end of the game: 12,233. 2nd highest was during Madonna's performance: 10,245. Oxford Study Explores Tweeter Reach & Influence

What can social media marketers learn from protests in Spain? Given that Twitter was used to get out the word about these protests, there's plenty of insight to be gained. To that end, researchers at Oxford  analyzed nearly 600,000 tweets over a 30 day period to learn how people were influenced to join these protests, discovering important information on how tweets spread. We'll cover the study's findings and clarify the technical language thanks to explanations given to Marketing Land by one of the study's authors, Sandra Gonzalez-Bailon. You can read the study PDF here. The Study [...]

Tebow-Mania Hits Twitter: More Tweets-Per-Second Than Bin Laden, Steve Jobs & Beyoncé’s Pregnancy

Among the many miraculous things Tim Tebow has done, we can now add this: a record for the most sports-related tweets per second. It happened yesterday during the NFL playoff game between Tebow's Denver Broncos and the defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Tebow's legend has grown this season thanks to his leading the team on several miraculous late-game comebacks, coupled with the quarterback's penchant to kneel down and openly pray on the sidelines during games. (A practice that's now called Tebowing, which has also been officially recognized as a word in some quarters.) Anyhoo, [...]

The Rise Of Social Spam: 1.5% Of Tweets & < 4% Of Facebook Posts Are Spam

The rise of social media has inevitably led to the growth of social spam.  The Wall Street Journal reported that social spam is on the rise and that the social networks are staffing up to combat this issue.  Spam effects over 4 million users every day on Facebook alone.  It's not stopping either; the volume of spam on Facebook is growing faster than their userbase. Typical social spam includes tricking users into liking/sharing content (like-jacking), or the promotion of malware from a 3rd party site.  The trickiest issue with social spam is that the message generally comes from a us [...]

Twitter Now A Top 3 Site For iPhone Users — Nielsen

Nielsen recently released a collection of Q3 US smartphone data, some of which it had been trickling out in blog posts over the past month or so. It's a bit like a "greatest hits" record. But seeing it all together in one document -- some of the data are based on user surveys and some on behavior -- is striking because it clearly demonstrates how powerful and important mobile is now. In 2009 only 18 percent of US mobile subscribers owned a smartphone. Currently the figure is 44 percent. In 2009 the top mobile handset was the Motorola Razr V3; as 2011 ends it's the iPhone. However Android is [...]

52% Of Sharing Happens On Facebook; Google +1 Has Plateaued, AddThis Says

Fifty-two percent of all sharing online happens on Facebook, about four times more than Twitter's 13.5 percent. And Google +1 sharing "has plateaued." That's according to sharing platform AddThis, which shared its 2011 Sharing Trends today. The numbers are interesting. Facebook, as you'd expect, owns the lion's share of sharing with 52.1 percent. Twitter represents only 13.5 percent of sharing on the web, but that's a whopping 577 percent (yes, five hundred seventy-seven) higher than a year ago. Tumblr's growth was even more dramatic: 1,299.5 percent between 2010 and 2011. AddThis says G [...]

The top Twitter events displayed in "tweets per second" (or TPS)  for 2011 were: 8,868 TPS: MTV Video Awards (Beyonce announces pregnancy) - August 28th 7,671 TPS:  Troy Davis execution - September 20th 7,196 TPS:  End of FIFA Women's World Cup - July 17th 7,166 TPS:  Brazil elimination from the Copa America - July 17th 7,064 TPS:  Steve Jobs's resignation from Apple - August 2 [...]
