Comedy Central To Host A Twitter-Only Comedy Festival Next Week

Next week, Comedy Central is launching a unique 5-day comedy festival that brings comedians directly to their audience. Well, directly to their audience's Twitter stream. Next week, a Twitter-only festival will be released that features some of comedy's elite including Mel Brooks, Amy Schumer and Carl Reiner. The event starts next Monday and will use the  hashtag #ComedyFest. The event will leverage mixed media and tweets, thanks to the collaboration between Viacom and Twitter. #ComedyFest will feature live-streaming video, snippets from comics on stage and the sharing of 6 second Vines. Political Ads On Vine? Yep, The Attacks Have Begun

It's not just Hollywood that's embracing advertising on Vine, the political machine is dipping its toes in the same water, and the six-second attack ads are already looping for eternity. Via the Wall Street Journal comes news that the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has posted an ad that accuses Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch (yes, Stephen Colbert's sister -- she's running for a seat in Congress) of potentially hurting jobs in South Carolina due to her support of labor unions. The NRCC is calling it "the first time a political organization has launched an actual ad o [...]

Vine Adds Trending Hashtags To Aid Content Discovery

Vine has announced a small tweak that it hopes will help users discover content: trending hashtags. They appear on the Explore area, immediately below the existing group of pre-populated "popular" hashtag suggestions. There's currently 12 trending hashtags to choose from, and there's no app update involved -- you should see them now if you have the Vine app installed. Vine's Colin Kroll explains how it works: To surface that content, we’re introducing trending hashtags, which show you the fastest-rising hashtags on Vine. These hashtags signify those that have moved up quickly in popul [...]

Vine Adds Video Embedding, Expands Social Sharing

Even though there've already been some clever brand uses of Vine, the reality is that Twitter's six-second video sharing app has had an extremely limited feature set. That's starting to change today with a small-but-important update to Vine's iOS app and its video post pages. Each video now has embed code for using on other websites, and can also be shared directly to Twitter and/or Facebook. Plus, as I'll explain below, there's a smart privacy feature built-in. The social sharing has already existed, but only for a user's own video uploads. Now, every video can potentially be shared eit [...]

Wolverine Film Director Premieres First Teaser On Twitter’s Vine

Twitter's fledgling Vine video app got a nice boost yesterday when James Mangold, director of the upcoming The Wolverine, premiered six seconds of the film as a Vine video. It seems to be the first time a major motion picture has used Vine to premiere film footage, bypassing the traditional release of a full-length trailer. That trailer isn't due to premiere until tomorrow, giving Vine a two-day advance window. Mangold coined the term "tweaser" to describe the six-second video in a tweet that's now been retweeted more than a thousand times and favorited more than 250 times. The tweaser. [...]

Vine Analytics Already? Yep. And Free, Too

If you're one of those super-early adopters of Vine, there's already a way to get a basic snapshot of how your six-second videos are performing. The folks at Simply Measured have launched a simple Vine statistics report that brands or individuals can use. The service is basically free; it only costs you a tweet announcing that you're using the tool. Once the report is ready, you'll be able to see a variety of stats related to engagement for your Vine videos shared during the previous seven days. (Perhaps a paid version will go back further?) The tool includes data such as: Total Enga [...]

Screw The Mission Statement, Facebook Cuts Connections With Twitter’s Vine, Yandex & Voxer

Brands and individuals that are testing out Twitter's new video toy, Vine, are learning the hard way that it doesn't play well with Facebook. Sure, there's a big button to connect your Vine account with Facebook so you can finds friends and connect more easily on the new video platform ... but it's broken. As AllThingsD reported Thursday, Facebook cut off Vine's ability to tap into the Facebook friend graph. Try it, and you'll get a message saying that "Vine is not authorized to make this Facebook request." Facebook didn't completely kick Vine out; after a video is made, users [...]

Twitter Acquires Vine, Launches iOS App For Sharing 6-Second Videos

What Instagram did for mobile/social photos, Twitter is hoping Vine will do for mobile/social video. The company confirmed its Vine acquisition today, and launched the mobile video service with an iPhone/iPod Touch app. (If you want to try it out, best to use that link for the download because searching for Vine in Apple's App Store is a mess right now.) Like Twitter itself, Vine is all about brevity. Videos play in a loop, and are limited to six seconds -- yes, six seconds. Your reaction to that is probably the same as when you heard that tweets were limited to 140 characters. Clearly, [...]
