Yahoo: We Take User Privacy Seriously Too!

Following missives from Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple over the past 72 hours, Yahoo issued its own disclosure statement last night about law-enforcement data requests. Signed by CEO Marissa Mayer and General Counsel Ron Bell, the statement said that there had been "between 12,000 and 13,000" data requests during the past six months: We’ve worked hard over the years to earn our users’ trust and we fight hard to preserve it. To that end, we are disclosing the total number of requests for user data that law enforcement agencies in the U.S. made to us between December 1, 2012 and [...]

Did you know Yahoo scans email to do contextual ad targeting similar to the way Google does for Gmail? That wasn't on my radar, but it is now, as the company is ending older versions of Yahoo Mail and forcing everyone to use the latest version, where terms of service allow for this type of targeting. Yahoo's Terms Allow Email Scan & Targeting The folks at rival StartMail (which is not yet live) sent up the red flag. We got an email highlighting the change. From StartMail's release: As of June 1, all Yahoo email users are required to upgrade to the company's newest platform, which allow [...]

IBM, at No. 3, is the fourth technology company in the top 10. [...]

Behind Flickr’s New Pricing: Yahoo Really Wants To Show More Ads

It looks like there's something more to today's series of Flickr announcements than just bigger images, more storage and a shiny, new design: Yahoo really wants to show more ads. As you probably heard, Flickr has upped its base storage for all users to an astonishing one terabyte of data. And that's free. No charge. Zip. Gratis. It's a dramatic change to Flickr's previous account tiers. Before today, Flickr Pro accounts ran about $25 per year and included several benefits that Free accounts didn't have: unlimited photo and video uploads unlimited storage unlimited bandwidth [...]

Rumor: Yahoo! To Announce Updates To Flickr During Today’s Press Event

The Yahoo!/Tumblr talk may be the biggest element of today's Yahoo! press event, but that's not all that will be announced according to Bloomberg. The once wildly-popular photo-sharing site Flickr will be updated, according to the report. Flickr has taken a backseat to other social sites like  Instagram, Facebook, Twitter & Imgur, but still has more than 80 million monthly users. Upon arrival, of new CEO Marissa Mayer, Flickr was actually dropped from the Yahoo! homepage during an initial re-design. Will Tumblr Be Yahoo’s Big-Splash Acquisition?

Yahoo is trying to buy social blogging platform Tumblr for $1 billion (or more). That would represent about a third of the company's existing cash -- though it stands to make more cash from its remaining Alibaba stake. It's a big bet and the type of high-impact acquisition that Marissa Mayer has wanted to make since becoming CEO of Yahoo. Why buy Tumblr? The reasons are almost self-evident. Yahoo is a media/content company whose primary revenue source is display advertising. Tumblr is a massive user-generated content machine with a huge audience and page views (read: inventory). It's a t [...]

Users will be able to follow tweet sources by clicking on the "Follow" button displayed in the tweets. It is not yet clear how the tweet personalization will function, but one would think that users who are signed in to Yahoo and or Twitter will be served mor [...]

Why Yahoo Will Never Reach The “Revenue Per Search” That Microsoft Promised

Microsoft has effectively renewed its search vows with Yahoo a second time, pledging once again that Yahoo will indeed earn a high "revenue per search" that was promised back when the alliance was made in 2009. That's not going to happen. When the latest extension expires in a year, the expected RPS still won't be reached. Microsoft will either renew again or Yahoo will walk away, if it can. All About RPS Yahoo Extends Microsoft Search Deal & Revenue Guarantees is our story on Search Engine Land today that covers how Microsoft is extending a part of its deal with Yahoo about "revenue pe [...]

Mayer, Sandberg, Systrom Make TIME’s Top 100 List For 2013

Several notable names from the search/social/marketing industries are included on the 2013 Time 100, the magazine's annual attempt to list the most influential people in the world. There's no ranking involved -- it's not a countdown, just a collection of movers and shakers grouped together in categories like "pioneers," "titans" or "leaders." And each person on the list gets a brief essay written by a guest author -- often also someone quite influential in his/her own right. Of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, her former boss at Google, Eric Schmidt, says "when I think back to our time working t [...]

The Mail app is a larger, tablet-optimized version of the Mail app that was introduced for the iPhone in December. Yahoo's new mail apps put Yahoo Mail's quality and functionality on par with Google's mail apps and will help increase mobile usage and retain Yahoo Mail users. The weather app, however, is not just "workmanlike" but offers a visually rich environment and should grow usage on the iPhone. The Android version of Yahoo Weather is similarly immersive, but not [...]
