Former Yahoo COO de Castro Made Tidy $3.8 Million Per Month

yahoo-featured Yahoo COO and former Googler Henrique de Castro was fired by CEO Marissa Mayer in January. At the time, there was considerable reporting (and surprise) about the size of his golden parachute, which Forbes said was worth a whopping $109 million. He wasn't eligible for all of it, however, given a four year vesting period. He was the first significant hire Mayer made as Yahoo CEO. USAToday reports that de Castro actually collected $58 million -- or the equivalent of $3.87 million per month for the 15 months of his brief tenure at Yahoo. Much of that compensation was tied up in Yahoo stock. [...]

Yahoo Q1 Beats Expectations, Search Stronger Than Display

yahoo-featured Today, Yahoo posted quarterly revenues of $1.13 billion. That's down 1 percent year over year but still modestly beat financial analysts' consensus estimates. Revenue ex-TAC was up 1 percent. Non Non-GAAP net earnings per share were $0.38, which was flat but also beat expectations. The company has about $4.6 billion in cash on hand. Some are celebrating these results and others see them as mediocre. Both search and display revenue were up year over year. Display revenue was up slightly (ex-TAC) but price per display ad was down. While display was somewhat soft, search was a st [...]

Updated: Email Senders Stymied By Yahoo’s Adoption Of Anti-Spoofing Measure

yahoo-mail-600 Note: since this story was originally published, we received a response from Yahoo regarding this change, and we have incorporated the additional information below. Small businesses using Yahoo.com email addresses to send to their customers or prospects have run into significant trouble getting messages delivered this week, since Yahoo Mail instituted a security change that's resulted in an untold number of bounces. And the problem isn't likely to be short-lived, as these bounces may result in recipients being removed from email lists entirely, due to their addresses' bouncing. This coul [...]

The Email That Microsoft’s Cortana Assistant Won’t & Can’t Read: Yahoo Mail

cortana big Microsoft's new cool Cortana personal assistant uses information from within your email to make recommendations and provide predictive suggestions. That is, unless you use Yahoo Mail. As it turns out, Microsoft is forbidden from  "reasoning" on Yahoo Mail for contractual reasons. I'm still gathering more of the details, but Microsoft representatives told me that the prohibition is tied some Microsoft-Yahoo contract that's old, that predates Windows Phone, but which is still in force. Part of how Cortana operates is by reading through email on a Windows Phone device, then extracting info [...]

Toppling Yahoo, Google Back On Top Of comScore Top 50

yahoo-google After several months that saw Yahoo atop comScore's top 50 US desktop rankings, Google has reclaimed the number one position. That's according to comScore's February's traffic/reach rankings. Yahoo and Microsoft are two and three, respectively; Facebook is number four. If Tumblr traffic were included in Yahoo's total, however, the site would still have the greatest US desktop reach by something more than 20 million uniques. Below are last month's figures for comparison. There's a high degree of stability on this list. However, the New York Times digital seems to have jumped eight p [...]

Yahoo Wants To “Tell Better Stories” With New Motion Ads

yahoo-motion-600 This morning, Yahoo debuted a new ad format that introduces "subtle animation for brand story telling." Called "Motion Ads," they'll display on the Yahoo homepage, vertical category homepages and the Yahoo login page. The example ad below for Kraft Singles depicts a warm grilled cheese sandwich with steam rising from the melted cheese. (It does look tasty, though you'll probably want to make the sandwich at home with real Cheddar.) The animation gives the display unit more creative horsepower -- or cheese power in this case. I noticed this ad over the weekend and did a double take on th [...]

Tumblr Appoints “Director Of Media,” Has Twitter Envy

Sistani Tumblr Facebook, Twitter and Google are all increasingly vying for TV and entertainment industry money. And the competition is intensifying. One example is Google muscling in on Twitter's turf with American Idol voting last night. Yahoo's Tumblr also wants in on the action. Yesterday Yahoo announced that it had appointed Sima Sistani "director of media." Sistani had been director of "mobile growth operations" at Tumblr parent Yahoo. More importantly for her new role, Sistani has a background in film and TV, having worked for cable network Plum TV and at talent agency CAA from 2003 to 2006. Yahoo Gemini Brings Together Mobile Search & Native Ads In Single Ad Marketplace

Yahoo has announced a new ad marketplace that combines mobile search and native ads. It's called Yahoo Gemini and it's available as part of Yahoo Ad Manager, the company's existing self-service ad buying platform. Here's how the blog post from Yahoo's Jay Rossiter and Adam Cahan (both SVPs) explains Yahoo Gemini: With Yahoo Gemini, advertisers get the performance and ease of search, combined with the scale and creativity of native advertising. By bringing the two together, advertisers can now buy, manage and optimize their mobile search and native ad spend in one place — driving great [...]

Yahoo Strikes Deal With Mocean Mobile To Form New Premium Mobile Marketplace

yahoo-purple-y-logo In an ad coup for Yahoo, its new Ad Exchange, launched at CES, will now power the new Mocean Mobile Marketplace. The nearly 5-year-old mobile ad serving platform, Mocean Mobile, will gain RTB capabilities and Yahoo gets access to Mocean's deep mobile ad inventory. Yahoo announced the deal, saying, "We are combining Mocean Mobile’s premium mobile inventory with our real-time programmatic buying and precise targeting capabilities. Mocean Mobile brings top-tier publishers to the Yahoo Ad Exchange -- from Nokia to Univision -- reaching more than one billion mobile devices." Brian Silver, V [...]

Yahoo’s Q4 and FY Revenues Down But Earnings Beat

yahoo-featured This afternoon, Yahoo reported a mixed quarter. The company had revenues of $1.26 billion in Q4 2013. That was a 6 percent drop from a year ago. For the full year, Yahoo earned roughly $4.7 billion, another 6 percent decrease compared to 2012. Yahoo earnings per share dramatically beat Wall Street estimates ($0.46 vs. $0.38). However, the contraction of Yahoo's display business (9 percent year-over-year) caused the stock to fall somewhat in after-hours trading. Net earnings for Q4 were $348 million, a 28 percent increase vs. 2012. However, net earnings in 2013 overall were just un [...]

When Gmail Went Down, Yahoo Poked Fun On Twitter, Then Apologized

yahoo-laughing-joke-featured Gmail was down briefly today, and Yahoo -- which suffered its own and much longer-lasting email woes recently -- still decided it was a good opportunity to have some fun, tweeting about the failure then later apologizing. Yahoo shared the news to its Twitter followers that "Gmail is temporarily unavailable," with a picture of the Gmail error page, as shown above. The tweet has since been deleted. Perhaps it might have been argued that Yahoo wasn't meaning to poke fun at all but be informative. However, that seemed unlikely (and especially so given Yahoo's apology). There was little reaso [...]

Yahoo Makes Secure Search The Default

yahoo-new-logo-featured Yahoo has now joined Google in making all searches people do automatically go through a secure server, to help prevent eavesdropping by outsiders. Unlike Google, however, Yahoo has failed to make an important change to how "referrer" data is passed along, which will result in people thinking Yahoo Search has suddenly dropped in popularity. Yahoo.com Goes Secure The switch only seems to be happening on Yahoo.com, not on other Yahoo properties I've checked like Yahoo UK, Yahoo Germany, Yahoo France or Yahoo Japan. Yahoo did confirm to us that the switch happened but didn't clarify on exact [...]

Yahoo’s De Castro Shown The Door By CEO Mayer

de Castro USAToday, among others, reported yesterday that Yahoo COO Henrique de Castro "stepped down" from his role, in the wake of Yahoo's decline from number two to number three (after Google and Facebook) in online advertising. Stepped down is polite. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer bounced him out the door. In an internal memo, published on Re/Code, Mayer says "I made the difficult decision that our COO, Henrique de Castro, should leave the company. I appreciate Henrique’s contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors.” There's no ambiguity there. None of the usual "wants to spend [...]

Will Aviate Become “Yahoo Home” Or “Yahoo Now”?

Aviate One of the most interesting things announced by Yahoo yesterday was the acquisition of the "intelligent [Android] home screen" Aviate. Aviate was in private beta, but I had a chance to use it for a week last year. It's clear that Yahoo could do a number of interesting things with the acquisition. The question is: will the company "go for it"? First, what is Aviate? Aviate is a home screen replacement for Android devices. It organizes all installed apps by category into a bookshelf-like display. It's personalized, time and location aware. It changes throughout the day and presents informa [...]

Yahoo Aims To Simplify Ad Buys With “Yahoo Advertising,” Brings Tumblr Into The Fold

yahoo-featured Yahoo announced several new advertiser initiatives during CEO Marissa Mayer's keynote at CES in Las Vegas today. The company is putting an umbrella over its disparate ad formats and buying gateways called "Yahoo Advertising." The aim is to give media buyers and advertisers closer to a one-stop-shop for Yahoo ad inventory to make buying Yahoo ads more appealing. The ad platform is backed by Yahoo's user data and analytics tools for audience targeting and performance analysis. Yahoo's favorite ad buzzword these days is "native advertising," and Mayer announced more native advertising opportunit [...]

What’s Yahoo? Mayer Says “Search, Communications, Digital Magazines & Video”

BdaDjj0CYAAlIR2 It's been a question that's haunted three Yahoo CEOs when asked in recent years: "What's Yahoo." Today, during her CES keynote, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer came closest to a clear, simple answer: "Search, communications, digital magazines & video." Unsaid was ads as a major area. And missing-in-action: social. There were the four main areas that make up Yahoo; and, while having four big areas still may seem complex, it's still a long way toward narrowing down the mish-mash of various Yahoo services that at times seem to have gone in various directions. Below, some further and quick t [...]

Yahoo Ad Network Charged With Distributing Malware To Millions Of Users Outside Of US

yahoo-y-logo-2013 According to a report this weekend on Washington Post's technology blog The Switch, two Netherland internet security firms revealed that Yahoo's advertising servers were inadvertently distributing malware. According to a statement from a Yahoo spokesperson sent to the Washington Post: At Yahoo, we take the safety and privacy of our users seriously. We recently identified an ad designed to spread malware to some of our users. We immediately removed it and will continue to monitor and block any ads being used for this activity. The statement from Yahoo prompted a follow-up report by the Wa [...]
