Cindy Krum, CEO & Founder of MobileMoxie is a highly sought after conference speaker, presenting and training in-house teams throughout the US and around the world. She also serves as faculty at Rutgers University, teaching mobile marketing in a Digital Mini-MBA program, and soon, a dedicated semester-long mobile marketing course. What mobile device can you not live without?
Obviously every business person needs a good phone, but my newest love is my iPad Mini. I use it for the fun stuff, like searching for things on Amazon Prime and shopping my favorite brands while I am watching TV. I also use it to stream TV in bed – so it is the FUN mobile device. It is also nice because it fits in my purse, and is much lighter than the old-school iPads.
Can we take a peek at your phone’s home screen?
Sure – it is not too exciting. I don’t like folders, so I use them rarely, and they are on a different screen. People are always surprised by the number of emails in my inbox – I will probably never be at Inbox=0, but that is not how my brain works. Things only get filed after they have been in the inbox for a long time, and are no-longer relevant. I really prefer seeing information, including emails, in chronological order.
What app do you use most often for work?
Other than email… I actually use the camera the most, because I am always taking mobile screen captures on different websites and apps for inclusion in audits, articles and presentations.
What social media network or website do you frequent most when you’re not working?
I am a Facebook addict. I treat it like a streaming source of entertainment, and when none of my friends are posting, I get disappointed and bored. “Well, nothing is happening on Facebook – I guess I’ll go watch TV or something.”
What’s the first thing you check on your phone in the morning?
Facebook, unless any of my current clients are in European time zones – then I check email first. I end up adjusting my working schedule based on the time zone of my clients, so if I know my clients have been awake for a long time, I go straight to email to see what is cooking for the day.
What work challenge keeps you up at night?
Keeping up with everything in the mobile industry is a full-time job. There are so many technologies, and new stuff pops up daily. It is hard to know what will catch on and what won’t, so I try to be aware of as much as possible, but not get totally bought into a new concept or idea until I am certain it has staying power.
What has been the most exciting work development this year?
I have a small group of developers re-building the MobileMoxie toolset and website. It is all still in progress, but I am excited about everything getting a facelift and tech-refresh.
How many miles have you traveled this year?
Wow – I have no idea! I have cut back on my travel in the past couple years, but it is still more than most, I think. My airline miles are spread across a couple different loyalty programs, so I really don’t bother to keep track! 2014 has not had that much travel so far but in 2013 I got to go to fun places like the UK, Italy, Israel, Spain and Colombia as well as all over the US.
What other career would you like to try?
I have always loved fashion, so I think if I ever did something new, I would love to be someone who spots trends or worked as a celebrity stylist.
What does your desk look like right now?
I work from lots of spots in my house, so you are getting two pics for this one. I am currently in a recliner, working from a laptop stand by my fireplace – Its pretty awesome.
I have a real office too – You can see in the photo that it is a bit of a mess right now – piles of papers and post-it notes that are needed to get my taxes ready to go to the CPA. It is usually a bit more organized than this. In this picture you can also see my dog Ginger is the desktop picture on my computer and there are some hand-made art pieces from family members all around the monitor. There is also a big red digital clock under the monitor, so that I always know what time it is, and don’t call in late for meetings.
What is the last business book you read?
I think I am unique because I love to listen to books rather than actually reading them. Audible was a game-changer for me, because it opened me up to all the audio books out there. The last two semi-business related books I listened to were Rapt, about the ability and impact of focusing attention, and Women Don’t Ask, about being assertive in negotiations for business and life as a whole. The second one was much better than the first, but a bit repetitive. I am mentoring a young women who has just entered the work force, and I think I will advise her to read the second one, a couple chapters at a time, rather than all at once. It has great advice, and fascinating studies and statistics.
For more on-topic books I have to reach back a bit further. The Mobile Wave and Big Data are in the list, but as far as business books go, neither really bowled me over.
Outside of your company’s efforts, what marketing campaign or video caught your eye recently?
That is a good question – nothing mobile is really jumping out at me, but I am really into the Olympics politics (more than the actual sports), so I loved seeing the Norwegian commercial for an athletics company called XXL, supporting the LGBT athletes in Sochi.
