The rumors leaked earlier this week proved to be true.  Today Twitter released their new mobile apps for Android and iPhone.  While some noticeable changes will be prevalent, many of the new initiatives will be rolling out slowly even with an upgrade.  The apps feature more than just the current logo, they will enhance the content and experiences that users have with the Twitter app.

Expanded Tweets

The biggest upgrade coming to the Twitter app is undoubtedly the addition of “Expanded Tweets.”  Users will have the ability to see more than just the update, but rather a partial story that is linked.  Right now the only expanded tweets will belong to partner websites and the feature will be rolling out shortly.  Twitter is touting this feature by saying “Now get even more than 140 characters.”

Twitter Ehanced Tweet

This is a big time-saver for users on the go as instead of clicking through every Tweet to get to an article, a quick synopsis can be viewed without ever leaving the app.  The added images are also a nice touch to the Enhanced Tweet, helping to segment between the Tweet and the content Tweeted.

Enhanced Events

Following along with events will be easier than ever with the new Twitter app for the iPhone.  Users will be able to see the the best photos and Tweets around an event similar to the web presence around events.

This is one of the areas that Twitter truely thrives in, real-time sharing.  The simplicity of Twitter makes it the go-to for specific events and the mobilization of these features should be a popular addition.

Custom Notifications

There are some Twitter users that you can’t afford to miss.  Now you won’t thanks to custom push notifications in the new Twitter app. Instead of getting general notifications, users can set personalized notifications that will allow them to receive push notifications from certain users.  This functionality can be enabled via the action button on their profile.

This is a great feature for pertinent information like corporate Tweets, breaking news or local news.

Search Autocomplete

The recently announced search enhancements are making their way to mobile devices thanks to the updated apps.  Autocomplete couldn’t be a more perfect fit for mobile, as users on-the-go are always looking to simplify and speed up their mobile experience.  Users will be able to search by real name or Twitter handle with autocomplete.

The official release notes for the iPhone app are:
