Who says Pinterest is a social networking site just for females? Don’t tell that to President Barack Obama, who today became one of Pinterest’s newest members.

The Obama campaign announced the Pinterest account today via Twitter, and the followers are already flocking to see his pins — the account had more than 1,600 followers when I made the screenshot above earlier, and now has passed the 1,800 follower mark.

At the moment, Obama’s Pinterest account has eight boards with 40 pins, including things like “Obama-inspired recipes” and “The First Family.”

But to be clear, this is going to be as much about the president’s re-election as anything. Like the @barackobama Twitter account, his Pinterest account is being run by the Obama 2012 campaign. And there are several campaign-related boards, such as “Obama 2012 in action,” “Obama 2012 Merch” and “Just the facts.”

Politics or not, having the President join and use the site represents a feather in Pinterest’s cap.
