Report: iOS Continues To Dominate Web Traffic

A report appearing in the Wall Street Journal asserting that Apple cut production orders on components for the iPhone amid weak demand sent nervous investors into a frenzy and sent Apple stock down this week. (The WSJ may have been “used” by people trying to manipulate Apple’s stock price.) We’ll find out about how stable iPhone demand is next week when Apple reports earnings.

What appears to be very stable over the past six months, however, is the amount of traffic that iOS devices are driving compared with Android. According to ad network Chitika Apple devices continue to generate nearly two-thirds of all mobile web traffic vs. Android’s just over one-third. This includes immediate post-holiday data for January 2013.

In developing this report the company said that it looked at ”billions of ad impressions from the Chitika ad network, spanning a time frame from May 27th, 2012 to January 12th, 2012.” The traffic data above includes both iPads and Android tablets and reflects the US and Canadian markets only.

StatCounter is in general agreement (though percentages differ) in North America. However globally Android traffic exceeds iOS and is accelerating.

    Most Android apps rely on AdMob (now owned by Google) than Chitika, but interesting that iOS dips right around Christmas which shows Android products must have been a much more prevalent gift.
