Report: iPad Still Dominates Web Traffic But Nexus 7, Nook On The Move

Several analyst firms have recently released tablet market-share estimates; however these are based almost entirely on “shipments,” which are not reflective of actual device sales or usage. By contrast, ad network Chitika released data today showing the breakdown in actual usage by device type in North America.

As the chart below illustrates, the iPad still overwhelmingly dominates with more than a 90 percent share of tablet-generated web traffic. However a few Android devices seem to be gaining.

Among the gainers are the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus 7 (just introduced) and the Barnes & Noble Nook. According to Chitika, the Nook “is now the third-most popular Android tablet, overtaking both the Asus Transformer Pad and the Toshiba Thrive in the past month.” That also means that sales of the Nook (or at least usage) have outstripped the more publicized Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 has come out of nowhere (literally) to gain quick adoption, with Google reporting sellouts of the 16GB version a week ago.

Meanwhile a separate report from the Consumer Electronics Association found that 29 percent of US online consumers own a tablet, with an additional 45 percent (almost half) saying they planned to buy one in the next two years.

The Pew Internet Project earlier reported this year that 19 percent of all US adults (not just online consumers) owned a tablet or an eReader.

To date Apple has sold just over 83 million iPads on a global basis.
