Do you miss the fail whale?

No?

Yeah, me either. But I did take some comfort in the Twitter-is-down mascot from the pre-IPO days.

Today, all we have is the robot above to notify us of problems with the network, which has been suffering a partial outage this afternoon. Twitter’s status blog posted this at 4:55 p.m. Eastern:

Some users may be experiencing issues viewing and sending Tweets on twitter.com and Twitter’s mobile apps.

I’ve been able to post on TweetDeck throughout the interruption and recently was able to sign in to Twitter.com again. We’ll update this post when we learn more.

Postscript (7:44 p.m. Eastern): As Twitter outages go, this one is apparently pretty mild. There’s been very little chatter about it on Twitter (or Facebook). I’ve reached out to Twitter for an update/explanation. Meanwhile, the Twitter developers’ status page shows all systems go except the userstream:

Postscript II (8:11 p.m. Eastern): The outage appears to be behind us. Sometime around 8 p.m. Eastern, Twitter updated its status blog to say that the issue had been resolved at 6:27 p.m.:

Update: Traffic was redirected away from the components that were experiencing problems, and the issue has been resolved as of 15:27 PDT.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
