I think “SMH” is the right web acronym to use for the latest stats that YouTube has shared this morning — stats that definitely have me shaking my head. Consider these:

  • More than four billion videos viewed daily around the world.
  • An hour of video is uploaded every second.

In the case of the first stat — four billion views per day — YouTube says that’s up 25 percent in the past eight months. As for the second stat — an hour of video uploaded per second — YouTube says that’s up more than 30 percent in the past eight months.

To put those numbers into perspective, YouTube has launched a new website at onehourpersecond.com that may not only have you shaking your head, but also covering your ears. (Wow, that flying Pop-Tart/cat thing is annoying.)

Just last week, comScore’s latest video rankings for the U.S. estimated YouTube with about 21.9 billion videos viewed during December 2011. No other site surpassed the one billion videos mark in the U.S. that month.
