New Feature For Facebook Pages? Listings Of “Valuable” & “Irrelevant” Fans
Potential new wrinkle could help Page administrators identify their biggest and most influential fans. And punt those who are merely loitering.
One of the limitations of Facebook Pages has long been the lack of quality information about people who have liked a Page. Audience insights are limited to non-specific demographics, such as user age, gender and location.
Page administrators who dig around enough can pull up the list of all the users that have liked a business’ Page, but there’s no good way to determine who are your biggest or most influential fans.
There’s also no way to tell which people are disengaged with your Page, that may have liked it years ago and have little or no interest in your product now. That’s crucial given that the News Feed algorithm is believed to use Page’s engagement rate as a signal to help determine quality of content.
But it appears that Page admins could be getting relief on this front. Reader Matteo Gamba pointed us to an intriguing wrinkle buried deep in Page settings, a listing for “Valuable” and “Irrelevant” fans.
We found the entries on a handful of Pages that we have admin access to. You can check yours under page Settings and Banned Users. In our testing, no valuable or irrelevant Facebook users were listed for any Page.
We emailed Facebook to for comment about the apparent new feature and will update this post if we get a response.
Postscript: As reader Craig Glaser notes in comments below, this isn’t a new feature. It’s been around since at least May, when the AllFacebook blog reported about it, based on Glaser’s tip. Glaser also said — and we experienced the same — that if you “Remove” a user from the list of people who have liked a Page, it moves them to the “Irrelevant” category.
Postscript II: A Facebook spokesman confirmed that this is a test, but the company has nothing to announce about it at this time. And, our friend Craig Glaser notes in comments, Facebook has removed the categories at issue from Page settings. So stay tuned.
